If you ever have a chance to sit with Shippy over several beers, get him telling stories. There are things that can't be unheard but holy crap you'll laugh so hard!

Opening morning is magical, the crisp fall air, the darkness of night with maybe some moon light. Breath it in my brothers, and remeber that moment before you step into the woods for at that moment you get to experiance mother nature at her finest, serine, calm, bold.

Just before I step into the woods on opening morning I like to take a moment and say a prayer. I call it the hunter's prayer and while it is a work in progress someday I would like to write it down and hope that my children carry on my tradition long after I am dead.

This year I think it will go something like this:

Lord, we thank you for allowing us this opportunity to partake of your wonderous creation,
We know that you are the master of all things and we hope that our actions on this hunt are seen as honorable and please you Lord,
We ask that if you find us worthy that we be allowed to harvest a noble creature that you created by your hand,
We promise to treat your creatures and your land with honor and respect only taking what we intent to use to feed us and out families,
May the wind not betray us,
May our shot fly true and kill cleanly,
May the game we take not suffer unduly,
And my we return home safe to our families at the end of the day.
AMEN

I'm new to this particular "camp" last year, but Friday night everyone gathers at the biggest cabin in the neighborhood for a potluck. Good food, decent beer, and fun stories. We go back to my aunt and uncle's cabin before most of the rest. They care more about the beer and cards. We all decide where we want to sit for the opener, and then go to sleep with that awesome hunter anxiety. Get up on Saturday and get to our respective stands. And so it goes. Monday following opener, the two 'camps' get together to process all the deer shot over opener. The people there for the week, butcher again on thursday and then the last sunday as well. Being a student, with a job, I was lucky enough to get the opening weekend off.

Sounds like pheasant hunting in south dakota for me.

And yes, there was an incident involving a couple dog collars. They weren't on the dogs. And they were set on high.

Deer Camp Traditions

One year they convinced a guy to put on the collar. Everyone forgot it was a stepping collar. Got to max real quick. I missed that one.

I convinced a guy to try on his harness the night before so he'd know how in the am. He really should have noticed he was under the meat poke / block and tackle. One rope and several running guys layer and he was making like Peter Pan. Until we tied off the rope and went inside. Uh guys?!

Pretty much the same here - except for the strippers... Unless, you mean stripper clips.

Apparently our new one is to inspect the stands and find fresh bear scat. :(

Same crew of 4 have been hunting together for the past few years. Things have changed quite a bit since Dad pasted and his old friends coming up to the hunting shack. I guess we have no real traditions except that everyone has to bring one meal to feed all. Usually something fast and east to prepare after a long day hunting.

A picture of our camp, even the outhouse on the right that has heat and an exhaust fan. The fan and heater can be turned on from the cabin to pre-vent and pre-warm before use. :D The heater is nice in the winter and the exhaust fan is a nice feature when up fishing, clears out any odors before use. 8-)

We used to give the new hunters a deck of cards, then tell them if they got lost in the woods to play Solitaire because some #$$hole would come along to tell them what card to play next.......

Books!! Every deer camp needs a library. Books are cheap these days since people started in with the electronic stuff.
Start with "Shots at Whitetails" by Lawrence Koller. That's the classic. A new classic would be "The Last Hunter" written by Will Weaver.

Everybody has a favorite.
