We had a friend of mine come up for hunting opener who has tried deer hunting but has never tagged a deer. My goal was to get him his first deer. Mission accomplished. He shot a small doe at 140 yards with his .223 she dropped but tried to get up and run, so I took a follow up shot to put her down for good. Real small doe, but its his first. Now its my turn. Will post success pics later. I an training the wife and my daughter too. Neither have hunted. So if they get a deer I an even more successful.
Wrap that around your overly muscled left wing and row your dinghy in counterclockwise circles as a result.

it shames me to admit it, but I practiced my "shoot and release" technique opening morning! passed up a short snout at first light, them took a shot at one about an hour later - thought I had a good sight picture in the scope, but the blood trail was minor and completely petered out after 4 or 5 hundred yards! Must have shot a little low and hit leg instead of chest... (might have to set up a target and do a little scope check to see if I have any excuse other than just ME!)

My buddy dropped a decent 6 pointer in the morning. For the afternoon/evening hunt, I told him he could shoot one for me if he didn't hear me shoot first - I had the only doe permit. It's good that I always let him have the best stand - he had a medium-sized doe come along - but she was acting a bit skittish and moved to a spot where he didn't have a good shot. he waited a bit and gave the buck on her tail a chance to show himself! so he wound up with a double 6 pointer day and we both have venison for the freeezer!

Medium buck, medium doe....meat for the freezer! RobDs Savage 110 performed admirably, at 110yds...I was a little disappointed, I was anticipating a whole lot further of a shot.

The doe came through my shooting area at just after legal shooting time....I passed on her thinking she was big enough to be trailed...sure enough, he comes the buck 10 minutes behind her. I sighted on him for awhile trying to decide if it was worth it...eventually pulled the trigger and brought him down like a cut puppet right across the neck. That spooked the doe over the next rise right into my father in law's shooting area...bang.

Two deer less than an hour into the 2012 Firearm Season. This morning was a nice sleep in!

Things have been sparse around here which is awkward we usually have 2-3 hanging on opening day. Only one fork so far and no other sightings. We have 140 acres and were spread out quite well so is strange no one has seen any other then the one we have down so far.

This was our first year hunting the 80 acres we bought last winter. Happy to report a productive and fun weekend! The brothers Beckwith and Sam had a nice couple days.......

Sam and Adam tagged out Saturday morning and Brian got his at first light today. Since I have to do all the post shooting work around my house, I passed up the opportunity to get up early/freeze this morning (and have to deal with butchering two deer) and used that time to get a head start on breaking camp. I'll head up later this week.

As woods again was good to our group. I had about 10-15 deer crept past before shooting hours, passed on another 15-20 before 8, lots of does, fawns and small bucks. At about 8:20 another wave rolled in, some larger does in this group, I could only hunt Sat so no time to be picky. A few bucks were bringing up the rear of this group, the largest was also keeping the most distance. I waited for him to turn and slid a 300 gr SST slug into him, he ran about 5 yards and dropped, GPS showed 115 yards, one of my longer slug kills. Nice healthy 8pt, but I should have waited, a nice 12pt started fighting with a 10pt at about 3, could have taken either. I think that 10pt was taken a short time later by the lady next to me, really nice, made my 8 look pretty shabby, but mine had it in weight. About 4:30 my buddy was getting desperate, he had passed on a bunch but was willing to take anything at this point(we drove together and had to leave together), I put another doe down about 5 mins after he gave the ok. Another nice 10 was taken on the other side of my stand, a small 6 pointer, and a nice fat doe. Nice haul from the little woods. This morning one of the guys took the big boy he was waiting for, that was the last of the group.

I took a button buck on opening morning. It was a clean kill, 85 yard shot, with a 1 oz Federal TruBall out of my 12ga smooth bore. The slug traveled right through the boiler room and he was DRT. I'm thankful for the blessing and look forward to grilling some chops.

Fork buck opening evening with the 30-30 from almost exactly 50 yards. Shot him at last light (4 minutes legal time left when I shot him) and thought he was a doe. Oh well, kinda burned the either-sex tag. I was more concerned with the laser rangefinder and making damn sure I didn't have a deer that ran off after I shot it in the low-light conditions. The shot dropped him like a bad habit, so I guess I can't complain. Was a tad over 120 pounds field dressed.

Year and a half old doe Sunday morning with the 44 Magnum. 70 yard shot, she ran off and made me find her 30 yards away. I wouldn't have shot her, but she gave me the perfect handgun shot pose for a little too long, I had a bonus tag, and nobody else had a deer yet.

Been seeing does and fawns, nothing with antlers yet. The deer have been pretty spooky and are not using any trails. Instead, they are pushing through the brush at random points making it hard to pattern or ambush them. This is pretty typical for when the wolves are around which was confirmed tonight when one of my dogs howled and received a response from about 70 yards deeo in the tamarak swamp next to the cabin. Hope those doggies move over the next couple days before I return. I'll have to bring some bird bombs with me when I return, a couple of them sent into the swamp may get those wolves headed off to other parts.
