2012 deer camp success thread

Well we ended the season with 6 for 9 was a pretty good season over all. All the deer are cut up and wrapped, now back to coyote hunting in a few days.

I passed on a good 8 on opening morning, and a 6 this morning. On the way to my stand this evening I got side tracked by something you don't get much of in MN.

My son's first deer. I'm glad I was a part of it. I've shot many deer and after several years of no success for him, he finally got his deer.

Where do you have yours done? That order sounds REALLY spendy, but it's been a while since we've paid to have our deer processed.

Where do you have yours done? That order sounds REALLY spendy, but it's been a while since we've paid to have our deer processed.

Its not cheap, that order was split between two of us, I think we spent about $200 each on the sausage and jerky.

Last year was the first year I didn’t do my own, was a little on the warm side and I knew I wouldn’t have time to get it done so I dropped it off, it really stung to pay someone but man was it nice. Use to make sausage every year with my dad but never got into the smoking, just fresh Italian and breakfast, problem is the smoked stuff is what I like the most. The jerky and sticks are what kill ya, the other smoked stuff runs about $3/lb, once you try it you're hooked, great stuff.

We usually have our smoking done by a local grocery store with a smoke house. I think they charge 20 or 30 cents a pound to run it through there smokehouse. Our Sausage Party doesn't happen until Christmas Time. We usually end up with a pile of deer, so its an all day event.

Our group had a great season.

Most importantly, a good time was had by all and all returned home safe, tired, but safe.

All saw deer and had opportunities opening weekend and this last weekend as well. Deer seemed to be running around like rabbits this year for some reason.

All told, we took 5 dear out of 6 tags for our little group. My 16 year old finally seems to have curred his case of the misses and got his buck fever under control enough to take 3 this year (his first deers ever). He was a very happy young man. Also, my 14 year old (just turned 14 this weekend) got a great birthday present and took his first deer. Dad got to be in the stand next to him for this event and I do not think I have had a more satisfying trophy experiance.

There is nothing better, IMHO, than seeing a youngster connect for the first time with the game. So much of what those of us who have hunted for a few years take for granted is new to them. How to move quietly and steathly into position in the stand, how to detect the deer before it knows you are there, how to remember to slow your breathing when your heart is throbbing out of your chest... He did great, chose his shot well, perfect heart lung execution, the bullet did its job and ancored that deer to its spot, did not run at all and other than a couple ribs there was no meat damage.

Like I said it was a great season. Only think that would have made it better was if the 3rd youth in our party had connected as well. Oh well, that will happen next year I am certain.

For now 4 of the deer are processed (by hand, no meat market for this group!). Summer sausage, breakfast sausage, ring sausage, jerky, and my world famous brats are all made, smoked, dried, ready to consume! One more to work on tonight and this deer season is a wrap, or is it wrapped? ( you know in freezer paper that is)

Shippy - my advice is to take a good look at the pictures on this thread. You are looking for the brown beasts -preferrably with the boney structures protruding from the skull but not mandatory. They will most likely not be laying down, so look for them in motion or at the very least standing. The red marks around their shoulders are not aiming aids or bullseyes they were born with and will not - I repeat - NOT be there when you see them.

I kid only because it took me many many years of getting nothing - freezing my arse off before I got one. I'm glad I wasn't easily discouraged. My first few deer sightings - including my first deer ever- I had the worst case of buck fever imaginable- infact I never got a shot off on the first 3 or 4 deer I saw and on the first one I shot, I wore the scope and emptied the Mag before I scored a hit - good thing we use enclosed stands and he was a ways off. I would love to have captured that on video - comedy classic for sure.

My boy continues with the horseshoe firmly planted. I gave him my stand on Tuesday morning.

He did a good job with a double lung shot that had minimal meat waste. The party of 10 had a good year everyone saw and was able to harvest at least one deer. We got 25, mostly does and fawns (6 antlered deer) We also do our own processing and finished that up yesterday afternoon. We had two hogs that we dressed out as well and made enough breakfast sausage to fill 8 five gallon pails. We also had another 10 gallons of straight venison that we ground and bagged. We filled an 18 cubic foot freezer to overflowing.
