Forgive my ignorance

Postby msnden on Sun Dec 30, 2012 5:03 pm

I am going to start hunting coyotes & I have a question as to what caliber rifle i can use, I will be hunting in what is a Shotgun zone (deer hunting) With that in mind, do i have to use a Rim fire rifle? or can I use CF calibers such as the .223, .22-250 etc; I have been thinking of getting a .22 Mag, but if these other calibers are legal that would probley change, (any opinions would be appreciated) Thanks msn

AFAIK its any legal firearm...so long as the area where you're hunting (WMA, etc) doesn't have any restrictions. i'm using a .308...
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

If you intend on selling the fur, you may not want to blow them up to bad.
Selling to a fur buyer can help fund some of the expense like caller and gas.
Best of luck

Any caliber is legal but rimfires would be a bit under powered.

Thanks, it just seems odd that i can use a .308 to hunt coyote, but can't (have to use shotgun) to hunt deer. Thanks again msn

I can't recall anyone accusing the government, at any level, of being logical. You can use whatever caliber you want. I would suggest using a centerfire. Coyotes are keen animals with good senses and a lot of the time your shots will be at the very edge of rf terminal range. Now mix the winter wind with those lighter bullets and you shorten yourself up even more.

Forgive MY ignorance, but what's a pelt going for nowadays, and where would you go to sell them?

Steve, there used to be a fur dealer in Roberts but that was 25 years ago.

Basically no rules for coyotes. No license required, hunt anywhere with any method, bait them, use electronic calls, etc. The shotgun line only applies to deer.

One thing you need to be aware of is 5 days before through 2 days after firearms deer season, you cannot have a firearm in the woods unless it's a rimfire or a shotgun with size 4 buckshot or smaller. If you hunt during the firearms deer season and want to use a centerfire rifle, you have to have a firearms deer license (even if you're not hunting deer) to legally have that gun in the woods.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but "anywhere' needs to be qualified.

While the OP and others seems knowledgable and experienced, some might misinterpret that advise. Lots of yotes in municipalities where firearm discharge is a no-no.

I would think any method needs to be defined as well. Poison, explodeing ammo shooting from a vehicle are all nono's as well as no shineing other then at certain times of the year and only while useing shotguns and a host of other rules.
