I haven't gone grouse hunting in over 20 years but either next weekend or the weekend after I may go up and take my lab pup up for his first grouse hunting trip too.

That sounds good, we're going up in two weeks. Moved it up a week so I could shoot in the general direction of steel targets in Hutchinson one more time this year.

No. I was by Grand Rapids. However, if you're hunting company land (Blandin, Potlatch, Boise Cascade, etc.) you really can't lose. I think you might be in an area that supports both grouse species. Don't believe what everybody says about spruce grouse. They don't taste like ruffed, but they don't "taste like pine" either. Sorta livery and rich. The meat is blood-red - almost startling when you peel back the skin. It's great with spicy stuff on it.

I'm going to Mille Lacs on Sunday, and will try some of my favorite haunts of yore. Will give a detailed report when I return (except for any of the specifics...).

Yes. If you made a wierd shape (four-sided, but not square) from G.R. to Hill City, to Remer, to Deer River, that's where I do most of my grouse hunting. It's mostly Blandin (I think) with some Potlatch in there too. Some of the guys up there tell me the hunting is awsome on the east side of 169, but I think they just want the good stuff to themselves.

I'm sure you guys know this, but if a person wanted to manage land specifically for grouse habitat, it would be pretty much exactly the way they manage it for paper production (paper is a little heavy on the pine, but not much). I've tried going further north, like up to Effie and beyond, just to get away from the crowds, but it seems like everybody is thinking the same thing. Lately I just stick to what works and tollerate the 4-wheeler traffic and logging trucks. IF you see a short guy with a crew-cut, screaming at a skinny psychotic German shorthair (or maybe aiming at it) That'll be me.

I've been very interested in learning about grouse hunting, I've got a great pheasant dog, a brittany, and a great 20 gauge SxS. Anyone open to showing a guy what grouse hunting is all about. I can trade reloading or 1911 cleaning skills for a little grouse hunting expertise.

I just go to the Mille Lacs WMA and start walking.... there is probably more to it that if you want to be successful :rotf:

depending on where you are I might be able to help. If you're near the Bemidji area let me know.
