Bowhunting and Carrying a Handgun

Postby Jayson88 on Tue Jul 30, 2013 2:18 pm

I have a buddy who is getting into bowhunting and is planning on hunting deer, turkery, etc...

He does not have a CCW. He asked can he carry a handgun while hunting and I was unsure what to tell him.

I am pretty sure as far as transportation it must be cased, no ammo near and not in reach - like in the trunk, etc..

Any thoughts on this ?

He may NOT have it on him while he is hunting unless he has a PTC. According to the Hunting Regs.

I believe one can also carry a handgun when hunting bears with archery equipment. At least one could a couple years ago.

That is correct, it is in the regulations. You can get a free copy at Fleet Farm or any other location that sells licenses. If you are in the field without a PTP, your gear can be confiscated by DNR.

If one checks the bottom of page 21 and the top of page 22 they will see that one can carry a firearm (not just a handgun) when bowhunting bears, elk, and moose. One is only prohibited from carrying a handgun while hunting deer with achery equipment. One does not need a permit to carry. This was changed about a decade ago as I remember.
