Any tips for Camo Painting a boat and Motor for Duck Hunting

Postby yukonjasper on Mon Apr 13, 2009 1:39 pm

I have a canoe, a boat and a motor that need to be camo'd for this falls duck hunting season. I'd rather not go out and by what I imagine will be 100 cans of spray paint, but that is the only reliable way I know of to apply camo patterns. I have witnessed the poor results in a brush and roller application - although fast, I don't think it sticks to the aluminum for a durable paint job.

The boat is a 14' jon boat, the canoe is 17' square stern and the motor is a 9.9.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or any tips from what they have done in the past.

As always, thanks for the info.

Get your hands on some AirCraft Coating Remover.
*Now strip all the old finish off the boat, cut any worn/cracked seam sealer out and recaulk using Automotive Seam Sealer.

Now get your hands on some 2 part Etching Primer.

* using an HVLP or Siphon feed paint gun, apply two coats.

Then get gallon at most of your favorite base coat color. (Olive drab for me)

* Use your paint gun to apply 3-5 light coats with timed appart according to the direction form the paint mfg.

* Use your paint gun to apply various stripes/designs with other complentry camo colors if you want.

Let paint dry for about 5-7 days and if your heart desires, get some roll in herculiner (not the dupli-color crap!!!) and roll the floors with 2-3 coats to make a slip resistant, silent boat bottom.
-Get a rope Tuco.

wow,
Thanks for the quick response. This sounds expensive, will these supplies be available at an automotive paint supplier? I imagine I'd have to rent the sprayer. Are there places in town who would do this for a fee?

Napa stocks most of the stuff needed. As far as expense... well when I say paint gun I don't mean one of those hoakie wagner deals, I'm talking about a real paint gun hooked up to a massive air compressor.

As far as matterials go, I did my 14' mirrocraft for about $150, butI allready had the paint guns, and the air compressor.

would this process help stop a slow leak?
My boat takes on about 1/2" per hour in the back. Not a big deal as I keep a bail bucket handy, but it would be nice to fix without re-riveting.

hmmm I think I may be in for more work than I thought. I would probably have to rent the sprayer also. I'm afraid that after all is said and done, the paint job may be worth more than the boat :D

Thanks for the help, I think I may be better off with the spray paint, as painful as that may be.
