Ewwybody be vewwy, vewwy quiet. Tell me about hunting wabbit

I would like to get into hunting. Deer seems to be the easy choice, since it is plentiful and popular. However, upon some deliberation I realized that deer hunting presents some complications. One, I would need to learn how to clean a deer. That seems like a lot of work. Two, I would wind up with a pile of meat I would have to give away because I have no freezer. Going to all that trouble just for a couple of steaks and a pot of stew seems a bit much.

So, I think I want to hunt rabbits. Rabbits are all over the place, the season covers most of the year, I like the taste, and my wife is actually willing to clean and cook them.

My main obstacle is that I know nothing about rabbit hunting. I don't know where to go, what to do with the rabbit once I got it, what gun to use. Seems like a .22 rifle should work, though.

So, who can tell me about it?

I've hunted rabbit exactly once. I was a freshman in high school and needed it for a taxidermy class.

Where: The woods. Any woods, or your neighbor's backyard. :)
What: A .22 works well, more and you'll lose a large percentage of the meat.
How: Walk around until you see one, then shoot it.

Afterwards, uh....skin it, tan it, wrap it around a Styrofoam taxidermy form?

Backyard rabbit hunting is best accomplished with my lab-mix mutt. :) It's legal, but I don't know if it's any quieter than a .22. Rabbit screams are pretty loud.

Most of the places where you can hunt rabbits with a gun, you will find no rabbits.

Smart little buggers...

Well, I do have a .22 airgun which could also work and be legal to use within city limits. :)

I hunt lots of rabits! not because they taste good but because they are a pest.

.223 HP:

as you can see, not much meat left...

I should have taken a picture of the one I shot with a 55gr V-Max... if it wasn't for the last bits of skin that were left it would have been split in half. Oh, the other one I hit with a 55gr v-max lost its head :D

I've also shot them with a .17hm2, it doesn't do nearly as much damage but those little v-max bullets expand quite a bit and fragment, you could do it with some .17 aguila hollow points and take only head shots.

Heres another nice shot, 300yds and running:

I think I shoot between 10 and 20 a year at my parents place and a few more in the area.

OK, the real question is: where, relatively near the TC, can one hunt Rabbits?

I'm coming to understand that if you didn't grow up hunting, it's hard to get started.

Does one call the C.O.? Does one look up WMA's? How does one get started?

yeah, I'm quite the heartless bastard.... so is that poor rabbit ;)

I have not met Onebohemian, he a tcc or mnguntalk member?

I've only once eaten rabbit, I guess it wasn't good enough to shoot them with that in mind, rather than eating them, I'd rather eat the produce from my dads garden that they wreck.

Keep using the .223, harvests and guts at the same time   Now if you could teach it to slice and dice and cook, I might get me one of those

Air rifle is used for pest control in the backyard, (1000ft per sec goes clean through). Every now and again I'll go out with the surefire Z2 combatlight and the rifle and wander the close neighbourhood, permit in pocket of course. 8-)
