My asking about shooting at distance was only due to my current knee issue.

338 Lapua Magnum up to 1000 yards. That's as far as I am proficient at shooting. Rifle could do more with a more expirienced shooter than me.

I wonder why they wouldn't make more of an effort to round up and auction the animals to ranchers who want to start herds of their own. I know nothing about whether they are difficult to raise, but I assume there would be some interest. I have seen herds sporadically in Minnesota on fenced property. It is tasty meat although I have only eaten in restaurants.

Ever see the movie/documentary unbranded?

They don't herd well unless they have been brought up with it. They will charge a pickup or guy on a horse.

They are also out in hard to reach areas, thus the lookout for reasonably fit folks.

From the article it looks like they will round up what they can, and shoot the rest to meet targets.
