Grouse - gauge, load and choke?

Postby cobb on Tue Sep 18, 2007 9:20 pm

Going to be heading up to the Bemiji area for some grouse hunting shortly and was wonder who shot what here?

I shoot a 20 ga., semi auto with an improved cylinder and on a rare occasions a cylinder choke. I do sometimes shoot a 6 load, but usually a heavy 7.5.
In the area I hunt it is heavy cover, even with leaves off in the fall, you hear a flush but may not see the bird. So I go for an expected short range shots in heavy cover and choke the load accordingly.

And you do....................

All depends on the area, the time of year, and distance being walked.

early season, not so long walks with the dog, 12 OU or 20 ga sxs, 7 1/2's

Later season, less leaves, dog in better shape, 28 guage SXS it is choked about IC and IM, and its a killer on them when you can see them better.

Late season, no leaves, snow on ground, (after thanksgiving) back to the 12 gauge, They seem to be getting up at 20 + yards and a lot more 35 yard shots,

Ithaca Model 37 12 gauge, 30" barrel, full choke, 7.5 shot. This thing is a howizter. Other people in my party send me call for fire missions. It's heavy, it's long, and it works. My dad bought it new in 1948 or 1949 and it's part of my family history. I've yet to come home from <location deleted> without birds.

But is there any meat left, or do you just eat around the 1 oz of lead in them?

It usually takes their heads off. I sometimes have a little damage at the front of the breast.

I think that depends on you Elmer. If you're vewy, vewy kwiet, and vewy, vewy careful, you will do just fine. I don't get real fancy. My old Stevens side by side 20 ga, modified/full. Hasn't failed me yet. We've always had grouse for supper.

Am I the only one that hunts Grouse with a .22 pistol? I don't take wing shots and usually hit them in the head on the ground. If I miss the head on the first shot I've often had the Grouse just stand there and I get a second shot. They are kind of a dumb bird.
