Squirrel ?

Postby SAM on Wed Sep 30, 2009 8:21 pm

Anyone here hunt squirrels ? A friend and myself are headed south towards Marshall area on Sunday to find some fat fox squirrels hanging out around corn cribs. We would hunt here but all we ever see here are grey and black squirrels, neither of them being quite as large as the fox squirrel. Nothing like roasted squirrel-mashed potatoes and squirrel gravy. Can't wait! :)

I always thought the fox squirrel was the smaller, nastier red one. I would love to try them someday, I've heard they are similar in taste to rabbit and those are delicious.

The little red guys are Red Squirrels. The big bushy tailed ones are Fox Squirrels. The grey ones are Grey Squirrels. The black ones are---yup, you guessed it! The red squirrel is the smallest, fox squirrel-the largest. They don't taste anything like rabbit, nor do they taste like CHICKEN. Squirrel is a taste all it's own---AND I LIKE IT!! :)

Usually 10 Lawn and Leaf size per. :P

The first time I had squirrel, it was in the form of Squirrel pot pie. The meat was browned in rendered duck fat, and it was served with a french onion soup from scratch, slow baked in a ceramic crock all day.
I will never forget that meal. 'Twas delicious.

Havt had the chance to hunt them in quite a few years it was one of the first things that I hunted.
Is there a reason other then size that you prefer the fox over the grays?
We used to hunt them near Little Falls but that dried up years ago, Anyone know of an area with huntable numbers that are willing to share the location?

I do a little squirrel hunting. We got 1 fox, 4 grays, and 1 red last weekend in cass county. We were mostly looking for grouse though. I'll be duck hunting this weekend but I'm going to try to sneak in a little squirrel/grouse.

Some of the fox squirrels we get down south are twice the size of the greys around here. Their diet is also different. We generally hunt corn cribs alongside the road. Corn fed anything is good eaten.

I normally don't go but my son has been bugging me to go so I think we do that this month some time. I also told him he could shoot the squirrels in the backyard if he was willing to eat them with me. How do you clean them? Just peel off the skin and gut them? What's a good way to cook 'em?

I don't think that you can clean them, remember they are RODENTS.....might as well eat a rat....

...never-mind, they are pretty good.......... :P

skin, clean insides out, wash, debone, and cube.
Cook in a little butter, add some burgandy and soy sauce, (I add a little Louisiana Hot Sauce) and let simmer.
Add some mushrooms and onions...season....
Add some sour cream, let simmer.........
Throw over some rice...

Works for rabbits too...... :D

Watch out for this breed, though:

Make sure you make ALL head shots. Use a small shears and cut off the feet-cut off the head-skin the rest-use a small, very sharp knife. Cut the front quarters off with your shears-same with the hind quarters. Keep the quarters and throw everything in between away. I usually bring a small torch to singe off hair that sticks to the meat. Put your quartered squirrel in the cooler you have with you that's 1/2 full of ice and water. Repeat-repeat-repeat. Rinse meat in COLD water--split the quarters-- shake in a bag with flour, salt, pepper. Brown in hot grease, about 2 minutes on each side. Remove and put in dutch oven with onions and an apple (whole). Bake 40 min. on 375 --take out apple and onions-add 2 cans cream of mushroom soup but only one can of water-bake another 45 minutes at 375. Meat should fall off the bone. Mashed potatoes-squirrel and gravy. ;)
