Lubercating the shotgun during the cold months?

Postby bandit357 on Mon Oct 12, 2009 11:27 am

I was having problems with my Benelli and 1100 special last December while I was pheasant hunting. I noticed when it was cold out that the actions where becoming sticky. So I tried using less oil. It seemed to help a little, but I can only imagine its hard on the mechanics of the gun. Of course a guy could go to the pump action, but I sure like my auto's when it comes to shooting rudys. Is there any kind of oil to use that is cold resistant?

I'd recommend to treat your gun like you (should) treat your car's motor. Warm weather gets thicker oil, cold weather gets thinner oil. You don't want your gun too dry, because oil displaces water. If your gun gets condensation in the action, it could freeze up if not properly oiled. Or if you are using heavy oil in cold temps, you will have a slow action at best.

I like RemOil pretty well as its pretty thin, but I'm sure there are a host of other oils that work well. Its kept my pumps and auto's free in some very cold weather. But, I also like it for warm weather. I don't really like any heavy oil or grease in my guns, but some guys are the opposite.

I've had good luck with Tufoil lighting grease Synthetic

Cold soaked several weapons to -20 f ,all worked flawlessly at the range ..outdoors.

Never used it on shotguns, but I use TriFlow on my pistols during my outdoor winter pistol league.

cousin has the benelli SBE-I.

He was having issues with it slowing down. Stripped it, cleaned it, used the fingertip to lube it with CLP. It ran good enough you could but a 4th round IN the action and it wouldn't jam.

the SBE-II's were fixed to stop that from being done.

I prefer CLP to RemOil, I beleive it is a little more durable on wear parts. I'm a Breakfree product fan.

I use LP in the summer, CLP in the winter. PowderBlast and the Borefoam for cleaning.

Lastly I use the Collector for guns in storage.

Last tuesday I was out in the rain a had water in every nook and cranny on my 870. I took it all the way down, shot it out with my air compressor and liberally applied JB-80 to it. Every surface and wiped/blew off the excess. The thing shed water like I waxed it today when I was out. And it seems to work very well for a cool weather lube. 8-)

The only time that my Benelli M1 Super 90 gets sluggish is if it has been shot a lot with dirty ammo and it's cold. If clean, which would be less than a box of ammo through it, it runs just fine in the cold. I have used several oils with no problem, just have to keep the contact surfaces of the bolt carrier clean and lubed, but not excessively lubed.

everyone mentions cleaned and lubed....

Not a lot goes into saying, "How much is too much lube?"

The rule of thumb that I use....

If I can see my fingerprint, there's too much lube.

I don't apply the lube straight to the gun either. I put it on a rag, q-tip, applicator or something else. Those nice syringes for putting oil on apply way to much lube.

I use AMSOIL SPray Lube in cold weather - it is very thin and DRYS and leaves a watertight film on the parts - nice stuff.

I completely agree. That's all I've used since the mid-90s when I found out about Ed's Red on the AOL message boards. I miss the smell of Hoppes though.
