Non-member only Pheasant game farms by the metro area?

Postby Snowgun on Mon May 07, 2012 9:12 am

My inlaws want to go bird hunting in November, and they are flying in from the west. I would like to take them somewhere relatively close to the cities that doesn't need a membership. Anybody have a good experience somewhere?

Here is what I found:

Does anyone have any experience with any of these?

Great find! Thanks.
I've hunted at Oakdale Ridge years back. I liked it, good fields and friendly people. Traxlers and Caribou was decent as well.

If there are any that are non-member ones, I have not found one. Oakdale Ridge that was mentioned is a member place (one person in the party must be a member).

However, most of them will allow you to hunt once as a non-member to "pre-view" the club. I have done this at several.

I would reccomend Traxler's in Le Center. I know they allow this just tell them that when you book. The nice thing there is if you need a dog, they will provide you with one and their dogs will hunt with anybody so you do not need a guide, just take the dog out and go get your birds. They have a nice resturant there with a lot of great mounts and a WWII room with some cool firearms on the wall.

In addition, this site has a pretty good listing of game farms/hunt clubs in MN.

I went to Traxler's last fall as part of a vendor promotion at work. I had never been to such a facility and had a good time. It seemed to be well run, they had a very very cool lodge with mounts from all over the world, guns, including EBR's on the walls, and good food. I talked with one of the owners for a bit, really seemed like a stand-up guy.

I'm not sure what the pricing is like but I had a good experience there.

Caribou gun club is open to the public, however, most of these places close for birds on May 1st.

According to the OP, his in-laws won't be here until November. They'll be back in full swing by then.

Just a couple miles west of Princeton on Hwy95. Not a super high end club, they have a couple of good fields, a laid back attitude, and some of the lowest prices on birds around.

I usually take the dogs over there at least once or twice in Sept for a tune up.

I haven't shot there, but drive by it on the way to our hunting land every weekend. Very large place, some public land (WMA's) attached to the property so you have to option of chasing scratch birds after your paid hunt. 1800 total acres of private land there, so it definetaly looks to have a more authentic "wild" fell to it.

Great people, prices and grounds. Not the fanciest lodge but they treat you right and they plant the bird you buy.

I've used them for 7 years and average about 50 birds a year from them. I've hosted a few of the members from here over the years.

Been there 3 times with Michael. It's a nice place and does not feel "canned". You can "pre-buy" birds at a discount at the game fair.
