Recommendations on good hunting clothing?

Postby Stradawhovious on Fri Jul 27, 2012 10:32 am

I need to pick up some decent deer hunting outerwear for myself and the boy......

Last year I really wasn't that prepared, and it got a bit cold. I want to get a head start on getting som e gear this year, so I can spread out the cost over a few months. Would like to keep it to about $200 per person for outerwear if possible. Cheaper for the boy, since it will likely only fit him for one season.

Used is fine too, preferred even, if there is a good place to get it.

Not looking to buy the best, most expensive on the marked since I am on a budget..... but don't wnat to buy junk either. I would like it to last several seasons.

Look at Walls clothing. Good quality without all the heavy marketing you get from other brands. I think Fleet Farm handles their stuff. Reasonable pricing.

I've got a lot of money tied up in outerwear for hunting. I don't own dedicated Deer hunting blaze orange clothing as it is hard to wear any other time of the year and you are stuck with the limitations on the temps that those pieces are designed for. To handle that, I got a good zip up Blaze vest to convert my Columbia Quad Parka or any other weight outerwear into deer hunting clothing. If its warm, it goes on over my tee shirt etc.

Hope that helps.

Cabela's Bargain Cave is work a look. They have returns. Some good deals can be found.m Fleet Farm and possibly Craig's list. I purchased mine at Holiday many years ago. Blaze vest is the option to go with a good jacket.

He's 5'8 130lbs, I would think that an adult Medium or Large would likely work. Probably a large if he's going to have room for under clothing.

I agree with the blaze vest over a good jacket idea. Much more versatile.

Buy a blaze vest and your set.

The key to staying warm is the thermal base layer.I have tried 100 dollar Under Armour sets/ columbia etc..They dont work as well as these

I believe you can even find them at walmart.

The other thing to consider is more blaze orange if you plan on hunting public land. The more the better for thats what i say.Too many damn yahoo shooting at movement etc..

Another vote for the blaze orange vest to mix with whatever else you are wearing with as much variance as we have in this climate... no point in hauling along 20 different blaze orange jackets/sweatshirts to deal with the weather of the moment.

My gear selection is focused on mobility so I try to stick to lightweight items that retain heat but let out moisture... the GI light and heavy weight silks/thermal underwear are affordable and effective, I'll usually mix the heavy bottoms with lighter weight tops. I also like the USGI surplus gore tex rain parka shell as it cuts wind while retaining a fair bit of heat in the layers I've got below it (also relatively cheap). When I have to sit still for a while I'll break out the wool/poly blend blanket I keep in my pack and wrap it around my legs. Warm boots, a warm hat and lightweight gloves also help retain heat well. The rest is pretty random, different weight sweatshirts & jackets, jeans, reinforced field pants and lightweight bibs on the bottom depending on the situation. Two pairs of socks, a wicking under sock and a wool outer is all I've ever needed in my lightly insulated boots to stay warm and avoid blisters.

Maybe check into the complete packages from these guys. They are an awesome value, really good quality stuff. I may have to get their bow hunter package myself and I don't even bowhunt.

Cabela's has a nice fleece vest in camo orange with two regular pockets and two cargo pockets -it's around 35 bucks. I've used mine two years now, and find it very handy. It's rediculously loose without a coat, but it ain't a fashion statement. Sure is nice being able to lose the coat after the morning warms up, and not need a wardrobe of blaze to remain legal.

How big is the kid? I have a pile of outgrown kid's stuff you are welcome to have. And probably enough extra adult stuff for you to borrow. Call or send a PM with your sizes and I'll check the wardrobe. Word.

Private land - I wear as little orange as legally possible. Vest with 50% camo pattern + hat, and whatever the weather dictates for the rest.
They sell that no brightener, sent free, laundry soap - That + cover scent will make it good enough.... They're gonna smell the cosmoline anyway, maybe it'll work for cover scent.

Public land - I wear only the best blaze/camo parka and bibs[by Remington] that Wal-Mart had to offer... On clearance... I don't trust folks on public land.. It's lasted probably six years now.

I know it's not the same, but pheasant hunting I wear some USGI pants, long underwear if needed, tee shirt, old fleece, my USGI(no goretex field jacket) blaze vest and depending where I'm hunting either a blaze hat or a booney hat. If I take up deer hunting this fall, I'm pretty much going to run with that and add my carhart bibs to the mix.

If you want to do it on the cheap, surplus may be the way to go. Granted my gear cost me 4 years of my life as opposed to $XXX.

This is what I do. I wear my plain old carharts or whatever clothing required. Think my blaze vest was all of fifteen bucks, and a size or two too big is actually good, in case its deep cold and you have to go over layers.
