Shotgun Scope Question

I'm going to go out for my first deer hunt up by Barnesville MN this year. It's in the shotgun zone and I'll be on a tree-line next to a 40 acre field so 50+ yard shots are a possibility. I'll be using an 870 with the cantilevered barrel. I'd like to put a scope on my gun. I already have a Nikon P 223 3-9x40 for my AR. I understand long eye relief is important with a slug gun. Here's the spec on the scope. I'm curious to hear the wisdom of the board. Am I gonna give myself a black eye?

One way to find out... Load it up and shoot it. Sure you can do it without the scope but it won't be as entertaining to us . Have somebody watch and see if it bucks back that far for you.

Better plan is to see if you can get an MNguntalk member to volenteer to shoot it for you scope mounted. Then you will know for sure

With 3.6" of eye relief it won't be a problem if your using proper shooting technique. The bloody eye brow will come when that 10 point trophy buck sneaks up behind and to the right of you and you have to take a left handed shot to put him down....... Ask me how I know

I wouldn't worry abt it. At deer rifle sight-in at my range, we have all manner of guns and scopes come through. Very rarely do we ever see scope eye with anything and shotguns don't ever seem to be a problem that I can remember.

My only comments are 3x9 on a shotty is maybe a bit much. And 50 or even 100 yards is still pretty darn close so look at either a fixed 4x or even a red dot. Lots of happy shotgun hunters using dots these days.

A 3-9x is too much, but a fixed 4x will work You realize that you have lower magnification on on the variable right. The scope on my slug barrel is a leupold VX-III 3-9x50 with the heavy duplex. Leave it on 3x then if the opportunity presents itself, up the magnification. That said 1-4 or a 2-7 might be better depending on your terrain and the shooter, but a 3-9 will work fine for most. For cold weather hunting I don't really care for dots too much and if there is fresh white snow the dots can really wash out. Just my 2 cents.

it should be fine. ill even shoot it first if it makes you feel better i use a nikon slug hunter with the bdc and love it. dropped a doe at 200 with it when she stepped out of the brush.

You might want to invest in a shotgun scope that is built for the extreme shock from a shot gun and that gives you the eye relief you need.
