Carcass disposal

When you shoot coyotes on public lands, what do you normally do with it? The regulations state that you cannot leave carcasses behind.

I normally don't shoot them, but I figure I would take part in their management this time around. I don't want to shoot them if I cannot leave the carcass behind (even use it as bait) on public lands as I don't want fleas on me.

If its cold enough, just let it freeze. Then you can take it to a fur guy. You won't get much, maybe $15. But you don't have to deal with trying to skin it and you don't even have to take it out of the garbage bag you throw it in. Plus, it offsets the cost of ammo a little.

True, I've only ever tried skinning one... Smelled worse then being faced own in the gutter next to a homeless guy.

I'm not a hunter---- if you don't use the animal, why kill it? Throwing it in a dumpster just isn't right.

Where are all these fur buyers? I've been looking around for em and haven't been able to find any. :cry:

Coyotes are predators. They're killed to save the animals they feed on.

I'm at 17 raccoons this year - killed only to protect the birds they kill.

My cousin used to take them to Prescott, WI. I've usually just sent them with him. Other than that I don't have any leads for you. LarryP, if you want to know why we hunt coyotes, there are plenty of statistics on line that explain it. Not factoring in that it's a fun and challenging hobby, or that usually the pelts are used.... coyote populations are exploding. As a deer hunter it is part of good management to try and help keep coyote numbers in check. As a person of society we are helping keep the suburbanites and their snack sized puppies safe.

If all else fails, your refuse contractor will most certainly take them. I use Veoilia and they told me put it in a garbage bag and put it in my trash bin. Just call your hauler and ask them how they prefer you handle it. You can bury it on your own land or leave out to naturally decay. But it is against the law to leave it on public lands, same as littering. Here is a good link from the MDHA. I have to cut the neck off the torso to get a bigger deer to fit in my can. But with a yote you could probably just bag it and stick in the trash.
