I want to shoot TX hogs. What gear?

This is my .458 SOCOM, basically a 45-70 in an AR-15, topped with a Leupold in 1.5X-5X.
You can buy a complete upper for $400-$425.
There was a whole set-up including optics at the Mankato Gun Show this past weekend for $850.

Where can I get a complete upper for 400-425? That's a huge projectile. The novelty and cheap upper might make up for the very expensive cost of loaded rounds.

My first hog hunt was with a Colt Walker clone. Round ball dropped him like a rock from about 30yds.

Any of the ar's mentioned Will do. Knowing the capabilities and limits of your chosen round is more important to my way of thinking.

That 458 sounds real interesting. 45/70 ballistics from an ar? What's not to like?!

Hogs, deer, jack-booted thugs, zombies (threaded for a can if you want to be quiet). Anything you want to drop with "one shot, one kill" reliability .

If it were me I would go with the 6.8SPC. It is a great round for hogs and deer. There is also plenty of factory offerings for ammo from 85gr to 130gr bullets. The standard is a 110-115gr bullet. Federal and S&B make some inexpensive plinking rounds. Here is a link to a complete upper for $425.00

I would look at a DPMS G2 compact hunter, or g2 light hunter.

308 is the best round for hogs in an AR platform.

I guess that as a "gunners' guru" I should not mention it, but the wild pigs of the world are properly taken with cold steel. The weapon of choice is a lance from horseback or a pike from afoot. One of our most colorful hunters of recent times was Sir Samuel Baker, and he used a knife. I have not taken many pigs, and those with a rifle, which makes me a bad example. But pigs may be among our most outstanding "big game" of the 21st Century. So let us, by all means, sharpen our spears.
