I have, used brown bear 62gr HP one shot. 8" barrel.
Now i'm using 300aac and 8.25" or 10.5", have both, haven't seen a thing last couple years.

The wife and I have shot four or five.

Old load was a 125 Nosler BT over N110 2100fps.

This year we will be transitioning over 225g TNT over H110.

We can get sufficient velocity to get expansion to just over 200yds.

Yes. Supersonic 300BO. Again, like using .223 out of a short-barrel, for me, subsonic 300BO did not instill confidence for me, and I have not tried it on medium game. I doubt I will, as supersonic 300BO works just fine from my AR pistol.

I'm going to have to look at getting a 300 blackout upper now. Lol.

Black Hills Ammo has a few 5.56 rounds that do well out of short barrels.

Shot placement, and knowing the max range at which expansion is still optimal are needed for an ethical kill, as stated before.

Correct about shot placement. For me, an AR pistol takes away too many shots/angles of presentation that I am willing to take.

YMMV, all I know is I have not ever had to shoot a deer twice.

I would +1 the .300BLK option.
If you are sold on the .223, you should be using a Barnes TSX. The 70gr TSX will carry a lot of energy and will expand down to 1800fps terminal velocity.

I have had good luck with the lighter TSX bullets in .223 as well. Solid doesn't suck with a small bore.

If anyone wants another option for a super short barrel, look at the Speer 75gr Gold Dot JSP. It can function down to a 7" barrel.

While it may be used on deer, I personally would not use an AR pistol due to other more acceptable platforms available for deer hunting.

But since I no longer hunt due to my mobility issues, my opinion really does not count.

I have 357Magnum, 44Magnum, and 444Marlin revolver/pistol setups to use for close in work, and all have been successfully used on deer in multiple states over the years.

If you do feel inclined to use such a pistol, please use a 5-round magazine for hunting. The appearance of a 30-round magazine is detrimental to our hunting sports. If more than two shots are required to successfully take a game animal, you should seriously reconsider its use - and practice shot placement rather than firepower capacity.

Again, my opinion, but over the years I've seen loss of hunting areas due to improper hunting methods.

I use a 300/221. This the wildcat that led to the 300 blackout. my load is a 125 ballistic tip at 2250 fps. I have been hunting with it for 10 +years. I am in the intensive harvest area and have taken north of 20 deer with it. From 10 to 186 yards (laser verified). It is a fantastic tool for the job where I hunt.

Thread Hijack-Is anyone using magnified optics on their Ar pistol for hunting? If so, what are you guys using?...The guys at APF let me shoot a few rounds through one of their pistols, and I wish I would have considered this option before I purchased my last slug gun.

If I were it'd be a real 1x to either 4 or 6.
