I carry whenever in the woods but to protect against red squirrels and two legged wolves rather than those with four. Being braced by wolves ranks just a notch above being accosted by Bigfoot but below being attacked by a rabid porcupine in my book. Others have different experiences which will affect thier opinions.

a sidearm has been standard equipment for me while in the woods for longer than the current Carry Laws. I grew up in Northern Minnesota in the Superior National Forest and have had my share of encounters. Granted none of them ended with shots fired or a narrow escape, but encounters that made me happy I was prepared if it had gone the other way. Seems like the case listed above was a fairly extreme example.
