Did some hog shootin' this week near Blooming Grove, TX. Got a real nice dry sow with my M70 .300 WSM. I also popped 2 boars with my DPMS compact hunter .308 Win. Lots of rain and mud to deal with, but we had a great time.

I found the bullet in pig #3, it was a Federal .308 150 grain SP. It was about a 120 yard shot. The bullet broke the left leg, went through the chest, and stopped under the skin on the far side. Almost a perfect mushroom. Neither pig that I shot with the .308 had an exit wound. The other pig was closer, maybe 75 yards. The biggest pig was shot with a 180 gr .300 WSM at about 50 yards, that one had a fist size exit wound.

you pretty much have to get a guide or find someone who has hogs on their land, and wants them gone.

very little public hunting land in texas.

I hunted with freinds that live in the area. There are some WMAs open to public hunting near by, but they were closed last week because of the high water. I've heard that there are guides that operate in the area, but I've never had any contact with them.

Lots of places advertise online. Prices range from cheap w no amenities to expensive lodges.
We're doing our third annual hunt this weekend in Texas. (Previous hunts were OK and Arkansas) Moore's Hilltop ranch, $125/day, no lodging or meals, but no limit on hogs.

You'll often hear guys talk about "shoulder shields" when hunting older boar hogs.

Here's a good example of a pretty heavy shield.

The hide over the shoulder is almost an inch thick, and it's so heavy and stiff that it won't bend.

We've had really heavy rain this week here in east texas, and the creeks are out of their banks.

It's pushing the hogs all over the place.

We put cameras back out a few days, so we'll see if they moved to the stand on higher ground.

Wouldn't go back to Moore's. Didn't see a single hog, blinds were filthy, outfitter didn't communicate with guide.
