Another reason to kill hogs

Postby minnesotatv on Thu Mar 31, 2016 4:45 pm

Deer hunters are facing competition from a source that is mean, relentless and out of control.

Their map regarding the reporting of feral pigs is not quite accurate. They indicate that there are none reported in MN - My partner and I have harvested 20+ in SE Minnesota over the past 5 years...........

Only in MN:

Why you can shoot feral hogs in Wisconsin but not Minnesota - TwinCities.com

September 8, 2015
After reports of feral pigs in northwestern Wisconsin, the state’s Department of Natural Resources asked hunters and landowners last week to shoot the animals — considered an environmental wrecking ball — on sight.

The standing orders are a bit different in Minnesota, where it became illegal last year to hunt feral swine, and officials would prefer farmers who spot them pick up the phone before pulling the trigger....

Hammar,

Pray tell a little more about this...

Game farm? Or what?

It was my understanding there are no feral swine that could be shot in MN. Game farm or ranch is a bit different, and in any case, I would be interested in it, if it is available.

No game farm - just the same concerned farmers that call us to hunt coyotes...............

Minnesota considers wild boar as an invasive and destructive species with little to no restrictions on how to hunt them.
This is the same as coyotes......

Minnesota considers feral pigs, though roaming wild, domestic animals and not wildlife.
This is the same as feral dogs.....
Page 2 of the 2015 Minnesota Hunting Regulations:
Small game/miscellaneous
• Feral swine may not be possessed, released, hunted or trapped.

Feral pigs and feral dogs, unlike wild boar and coyotes, are destructive and not afraid of humans - they will attack humans.
There is allegedly some legislation being considered to change the feral pig law......but not for the feral dogs...... :?

How does one tell the difference between wild boar and feral pig?

I figured that would be the flaw with my plan. Good thing it wasn't the shoot it first part. ;)

So does that mean that the offspring of feral pigs become wild pigs? :?

So called domesticated pigs require cutting of tusk teeth as piglets to help prevent overgrown tusks. Turn loose these pigs into the wild to fend for themselves and it is surprising how fast the tusks start to grow. They have no fear of humans, and will attack without provocation. We had a local farmer that had a heart attack (supposed as he had a record of having a weak heart) while in the pig pen. In the Spring they found his watch, pocket knife, keys, and some bone fragments that were tested to be human. I shoot wild pigs, after getting permission from the land owner to be on his property. I will let anyone hunt pigs on my property in NW Wisconsin Bayfield County, after speaking to me and receiving written permission to be there. (helps prevent hassles from DNR and Sheriff)

One time my partner and I were dragging a couple of young ones out of the field and a old farmer stopped and asked what we had....
I told him pulled pork.......he sure gave us a strange look!
