1st coyote of the year

Postby arizona98tj on Sat Apr 09, 2016 1:13 pm

I got my first coyote for 2016 on March 18th, having just moved back to Minnesota a couple of days before Christmas. It is nice when the wife lets you shoot from inside the house (with the sliding glass door opened). I had to take my slippers off and put on my boots to go check it out after shooting it. :)

All the details and more photos can be seen at my web site.

I've not been on the forum for the past year with everything happening getting ready to sell our house in AZ, move, get my retirement arranged, etc. Am looking forward to participating more now that things have settled down and we are in our new house outside of Bemidji. Between getting the house and yard finished, cutting firewood, etc., I'll hopefully get some time to load up some .223 rounds for hunting. I also need to get some 6.5 Grendel loads ready for deer season. I got my crossbow a couple of weeks ago and that will be ready to go once I figure out what broadheads I'll be using on it.

Do you eat those?
Donald Trump got more fat women moving in one day than Michelle Obama did in eight years.

Mrs. and I did some research and found a fair amount of info indicating they are quite edible. I am on the fence with that one. We did not eat this one.

Not bad, especially with the set up you used.

I regularly call them inside of 20yds and use a shotgun, although in my area most use rifle for the open fields. I'm not that good past 150 so I prefer to bring them up close and personal. Makes it a bit more challenging too.

The last one I got almost ran over me coming in to my call. He stopped about 10yds past and looked back like "what are you doing there?" #4 buck does a fine job at 10yds, just don't plan on saving the pelt.

I live near Bemidji. I hope to do some coyote hunting this winter. Having moved here a few days before this past Christmas, I had far too many things going on to spend time chasing dogs during our first winter. Next on the list is to do some research on calls and figure out what I'm going to try.

Cool. Am south of you by DL. I got a IcoTech call from Amazon. Has good reviews.. but I have not yet had a chance to try it in the field.

Thanks for the info on the call.....I'll have to look it up and do some reading on it.

Edit: Which model do you have....I see that there are several available.

GC300. Has generally favorable reviews online and I am a casual coyote hunter. Not wanting to break bank, that's what I picked. Hoping to get out this winter...

All I've used coyote hunting for probably the last 15 years is an AR. Best tool for the job IMHO. 50 grain V-Max's

V-Max bullets work. I've got some 40, 50, and 53 gr V-Max to try out. Will hopefully get to it this winter. I also have some Nosler Ballistic Tip's to load if I get the chance.
