Alaska moose hunters facing years in jail for taking antlers, leaving behind meat

Two men from Massachusetts are facing criminal charges after cutting the antlers
off a moose and leaving behind the body on a recent hunting trip in Alaska.

Matthew Kelley, 42, and Michael Dagilus, 44, could end up serving years in jail
for what the state prosecutor is calling “one of the worst Fish and Game violations
the state has seen this year,” KYUK reports.

I don't understand why one would do that. Moose meat is awesome.

It’s also clearly listed in the regs that meat is the first out.

As someone who has helped haul a moose out... it’s a damn lot of work, especially if it dies in a big or stream!

I am glad to see these guys held accountable. If they didn't want the meat, they should still have brought it out of the woods, and donated it to a charity. There are numerous charities in AK that will assure that the meat is given to the needy.

It's scum like this that make it hard for other hunters, that are hunting ethically.

Fry them. Let them sit in jail for a few years.

Can someone tell me any plausible reason how/why this happened? I’ve looked into fishing trips to Alaska and it’s incredibly expensive. I’m assuming hunting trips are similarly astronomically expensive. Why would someone fly all the way out to Alaska, exert yourself during a remote hunt, pay handsomely for the privilege, all just for antlers? Why not just buy a mount? Not only is the scumbag facing a criminal prosecution, and the privilege of paying for defense attorneys, there’s no way he emerges unscathed enough to retain his rights to own firearms.
