How do you get into competition?

Postby bobbfrommn on Fri Mar 11, 2011 6:40 am

So as I mentioned in my intro, my softball team is falling apart so I think shooting is going to get more attention and turn into a hobby. If I wanted to get into something more organized like a league or competitions how would start? I've done trap leagues before but never anything with a pistol.
Thanks
Bob

Check out Twin Cities IDPA. Add a .com to the end.

Talk to joeh regarding IDPA, Ahrens or Tim warner regarding USPSA and Selurcspi or any of the rest of us regarding steel shoots. I personally have experience with the last two, and really only have one recommendation......... try it.

When you show up, bring your gear. If you just show up to watch, and leave your gun at home, you will wish you brought it to shoot. It's a lot of fun, and good solid trigger time.
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.

Really depends on your location. If you are NW of the cities contact Bob Mills at SCPSA we is fantastic and will get you introduced to the club and as a whole the group is a great bunch of folks.

Thier Tuesday night league is a bargin.

I would second the steel shoots as the best possible introduction. It is sort of a "soft IDPA" with an intro to the same basic rules, requirements and competition, and really helped me gain some confidence to begin to shoot IDPA. As Strad said, bring your gun and jump right in at the steel shoots. After a couple of those, you will be completely prepared and comfortable to jump to IDPA. Not to mention that the steel shoots are just sheer fun!

Oakdale USPSA ... many links to other USPSA/IDPA clubs, therein ... and other stuff

As others have said ... pick one ... show up ... WITH a gun!

This is a good introduction. Other clubs do "New Shooter Orientation" classes too. I highly recommend them.

Knowing your location is important to any recommendations.

Lots of good info on who to talk to already on this thread so I'll just add some further visual info on the action shooting sports themselves. (if that's what you're looking for) They all are available locally.

Steel shooting. Local clubs may or may not have a rimfire division.

Do a little research and decide what type of competition you'd like to try, or better yet try all of them. Then check out the Calendar here on the forum. Snowgun does a great job of putting up many different types of events with all the info and related links you'd need to get started. From there just bring a gun and some ammo and have a blast. I attended a steel shoot first which is a great starting place. Aside from some friendly ribbing back and forth they are a very friendly atmosphere where you don't feel as pressured and there are a lot of great people to help you. I think that the USPSA and 3-Gun matches are the most fun, but they are a little more fast paced. I'm still a rookie to this whole thing as well but I don't care about winning I'm just there to have fun and as long as I don't make myself look too stupid I'm having fun.

Also you don't need a lot of fancy equipment to compete. Pretty much just a working gun, holster, and some magazine holders.
