Tonight might just be the night to give this a try

Trying to read thru the equiment rules is giving me a headache.

Can I use a Browning HP 9mm and a Yaki holster and if so what catagory would I be in? Are 4 mags enough?
Oh yeah how many rds of ammo are needed? And how much does it cost? And and and and :?
I think I read set up starts around 4 does anyone get there earlier?

Guess I should figure out where its at and how to get there and how long it takes and and

For your first time, I wouldn't worry about what category you'll be in.
I'll let RugerSol or TimWarner answer on holster
Theoretically, IIRC, the courses could call for 32*4 = 128 rounds of ammo. Of course, you could SHOOT more than that. In practice, 2 of the stages are short stage classifiers which take less rounds. I bring 150 rounds. IDK how many I use but it's never been more than 150.
private or small grou permit classes available

Well kinda sorta, I tried this about 15yrs ago and didnt care for all the bull**it argueing about how stages could or couldnt be shot didnt stick with it long and gave up shooting for 2-3 yrs until finding CAS shooting that I have been active in for the past 12 yrs. I have tried IDPA twice and although it was OK all the shoots seem to conflict with my weekend shooting and this is a Th shoot thought I might give it a try again.
Also tried 3 gun once and it was ok but expensive and conflicted with my CAS shooting but was fun.

Should have enough ammo ;) Although I wouldnt mind getting some most of my empties back.

I might have to leave the bike at home and drive a car in order to get all the **** loaded in it.

If I make it ( not raining or some other weather related issue hot) I should be there around 3:30-4 and hopefully get a better idea of whats going on.

jest wanted to say "Thanks!" to a bunch of the guys fer some real good discussion last nite! ... I was inspired to augment our "basics" page based on much of it (as well as the Clint Smith video sent to me by Jim Image ) ... this has resulted in a few things I hadn't considered, from an "orientation" perspective ... and to the extent anyone comprehends it, I believe everyone'll benefit from it (at the very least, making a few guys more safe).

Specifically, I'm liking the "home" drill (not spelled out in this manner, but hopefully they get there):

1. belt, holster, mag-holders, EMPTY-gun, EMPTY-mags

2. large room, pick a wall, walk the the length of the wall, back 'n forth

3. starting anywhere, face the wall (or back to it, then turn 180° to face it) and draw (make "bang, bang" sound)

4. pull the gun straight back up to your chest

5. finger OUT of the trigger-guard (straight along the slide)

6. turn yer body (not the gun ... keep it 90° to the wall)

7. walk

8. while walking (once in a while), keeping muzzle 90° to the wall, and finger OUT of the trigger-guard, eject EMPTY magazine, load new EMPTY magazine

9. while walking (once in a while), stop, face wall, extend gun forward as to fire (make "bang, bang" sound)

10. go back to #4

If yer right-handed, walking to the left, ya'll find performing a reload, while keeping it pointed at the wall, very difficult ... this is likely where ya'd DQ (saw several "seasoned" shooters come very close, last nite, doing precisely this). The argument could be made, that courses should be designed to avoid this. We could also ban left-handed shooters ... or jest shoot NRA bullseye! Or, we can continue to DQ folks for breaking the 180° before anyone's in any real danger ... and they can remember they probly shouldn't do that, no more!
