And I'll carry your coffee. Problem solved, the more we can tire Payne out the better our odds of actually beating him

In all seriousness, we will try to get there as early as possible to help. It's a huge advantage to get there early enough to help with setting up the stages and get the inside scoop.

So looking forward to kicking off the 2012 season

Fairly sure I will be there early again to help out on set up. Won't make it out for breakfast though. :D

Is this something a person has to sign up for in advance?

Anything else a tyro would need to know?

upcomming 3 gun match

Postby Snowgun on Sun Feb 26, 2012 2:31 pm

3 guns, 100 rnds each + slugs, holster, and a way to carry mags and about a box of shells on your person, that's all you need, and just show up.

Pretty rare you will see a stage you would need more than 40 rounds for the rifle or pistol. It all depends on how you plan your stage, on paper you can save ammo by taking your time to aim and limit just one round to the A zone vs. 2 rounds anywhere on paper. On steel targets it all depends on your hit to miss ratio. If you're missing on steel, you can sit and fire away at them until you time out, there is no max round count. Most would suggest if you don't hit a target after 3-5 rounds just move on and take the penalty. It faster than emtying an entire mag on that one stubborn target.

I generally will start with a loaded pistol with 2 spare mags. That gives me 48 rounds which is enough for most any stage at the local matches I've been to. If it's a long stage I may keep a 4th mag in my back pocket just in case things go horribly wrong.

Just a few things for people attending this shoot to consider. The following is a list of skills that I know will be tested at this shoot based on the courses of fire that are drawn up.

1. You will be running (not very far) with a holstered pistol. Make sure you are using something that is secure.
2. You will be shooting targets with shotgun and rifle from both right and left shoulder with a reload of that weapon mixed in. Take the time and dryfire practice safely making the transition from one shoulder to the other without accidentally touching the trigger of the weapon.
3. You will be required to shoot both right and left handed supported with your handgun. Again, practice the safe transition.
4. There may be some 80-90 offhand rifle targets. The targets are large, but can still become difficult if you have to hold the weapon up for a good length of time. Practice holding a perfect sight picture on a small dot or object for as long as you can, and you will see what I mean.
5. Shotgun reloading. There may not be a lot, but you will be required to reload your shotgun on the clock. Try to figure a way to have extra shells on your person either in some sort of shell holder, or even cargo pockets.
6. Weapon transitions. You will be required to shoot one weapon, then transition to another weapon by abandoning the first weapon. Every abandoned weapon must be completely empty when abandoned. By that I mean you will shoot your shotgun dry, the rifle will have the magazine removed THEN the chamber cleared (you don't need to lock the bolt back), and the handgun will have magazine removed THEN chamber cleared.
7. Slings are not needed, and are actually frowned upon. The reason is safety. Slings have been known to yank a pistol out of the holster during a course of fire. At this match at least, you will not be required to carry one long gun while using another weapon.

Targets for Handgun will consist of paper IPSC silhouette targets, steel plates, and steel pepper poppers. Shotgun targets will be stationary clays in holders, steel plates on stands, and pepper poppers. Rifle targets will be paper IPSC sihouette targets and 2/3 size IPSC steel plates on stands that both ring like a bell and move when hit.

The rifle steel targets (a good portion provided by MFR Metals) are armor plate but can still be damaged by "steel core" bullets. As some of these targets are my personal targets, I ask that everyone take the time to use a magnet on the bullet of your choice. If the magnet sticks to the bullet (not the case), you will not be allowed to use that ammo on the steel targets. We will try to work out an alternative. The steel plates are also armor steel but can not be shot with shotgun slugs or steel shot. All shotgun ammo must be lead shot only! Steel shot can bounce back off of steel plates and be a hazard.

There will be a Range Officer (RO) right next to you while you run the courses of fire. We will coach you through the course if you are new, and we will make sure you take the time to do things safely. No one at this match will receive a new Ford truck for winning. We are all here to have a good time only, and the RO's will try to make it so that you are safe and will want to come back and try the sport again.

Sorry, the rifle targets may be 80-90 yrds away.

Also, for anyone that due to injury or whatever. If you can not shoot with your left or right hand, or left or right shoulder, you can still run the course of fire. There will just be a time penalty added to your score, and you then shoot the course of fire the best you can.

I figured he was just trying to give himself the upper hand when he busts out the Beta

3 days to the match, hopefully the range didn't fill in with snow too bad. Looking forward to trying out a bunch of new gear. Hopefully it doesn't crash and burn.....or me for that matter.

Sorry for the long winded post. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew what they were in for on one of my courses of fire. We don't normally post advanced warning, but this course of fire is somewhat extreme. If the shooters have a little time to rap their brain around the idea in advance, it tends to have a more harmonious outcome at the match.

I hope to see everyone on Sat.

I seem to recall some local matches with rather large round counts on rifle stages. At least 60+ if you double tapped. The zombie target stage at the Tri-gun was the worst because only head shots counted (in the small scoring zone that you couldn't see while shooting not just anywhere in the head) and there were 30, give or take, of them scattered in a skinny bay ranging from 5 yards to 50 yards hiding behind various props. It was way too easy to lose your place and many targets got triple tapped just to be sure. Lots of warm rifles at the end. And plenty of swearing.
Yeah, but I shoot with THIS hand.

Don't be sorry, that's all great stuff to know, appreciate you laying it out like that. Especially helpful for guys like my neighbor who is going to his first 3-gun this Saturday. He was just over last night getting the lowdown on rules and what to expect. That and to grab the shotgun he's borrowing so he can familiarize himself with it before the match. 2 days to go :D

Keith

In that same bay during a mini 3-gun there was a 90 round rifle stage. Tyler ran it first with my rifle, then my oldest son Nathan, then I was up again using the same rifle. The smoke was already coming off of the handguard when I stepped to the line, by the time I was done the handguard was almost too hot to touch. 90 rounds in under 40 seconds was pegging the fun meter though.
