Want to get into competitive shooting

Postby saltedpeanut on Fri Mar 09, 2012 6:20 pm

I would like to get started in shooting competitively just for some recreation. I like going to the range on my own, but would rather do something that is a little more active and stimulating. I've looked into GSSF and IPSC stuff and it looks interesting, any tips on where to start? Do I need to register before I go? FWIW I usually shoot at the Burnsville Pistol Range.

A couple years ago i was in the same shoes. Just show up at a match and introduce yourself to the Match Director and let them know you are looking to get involved. They will generally have you follow a squad around for the event, paste targets, ect.. Bring your gear too, oftentimes they will let you shoot a course of fire after the main event is done.

Thinking I can make it tomorrow, what do I need to bring? I will bring my pistol (obviously), hearing/eye protection, how much ammo should I bring? Anything else?

As many magazines as possible.

If you don't have mag pouches, wear something that you can put magazines into that you can get at easily. (like a very thin jacket with hand pockets).

I'll bring a couple double stack double mag holders for you to borrow. If Th3180 comes he'll bring some mags but he's 50-50 on being able to make it. IIRC the stages were ~20-32 rounds if you don't make up any shots. you could pm skyrock and see what the round count is going to be. there would probably be someone there shooting a glock in 9mm that might loan you some mags. it's amazing how helpful people are. The Match irector (Skyrock) might be able to pair you up with someone even.

In response to your voicemail, I'll try to remember to toss a couple of 9mm mags in my bag.

To the original poster: they sell Glock magazines at Fleet Farm.
