Could you please define pistol bays a little more precisely?? There will be 8 -10 shooting positions or bays on the Short Range, with partitions in between. What additional digging will be required for something else, why does it have to be digging, and what kind of shooting are we talking about??

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Al Leirness, and I am the chair of the Construction Review Committee appointed by the OGC Board in late December. We are not able to dig in the ground in any manner that would alter the flow of water over the surface of the ranges because doing so would trigger a review by the So. Washington Co. Watershed district and be cost prohibitive and time delaying. We can drill holes for the steel posts to support the overhead steel and the walls. We also cannot do anything additional beyond what was shown to the city in the plans presented in 2012 without triggering a Conditional Use Permit review and a new building permit. We can do less than was shown on the original plans but not more and nothing in addition to what was shown.

What I was referring to, (and being a little facetious while doing so, sorry), is that fact that Oakdale has sort of missed/ignored the boat in regards to the pistol sports. A pistol bay (or finger), is a range out to 25-50 yrds that has side berms that can be shot into. For examples, see MG&F, Faribault, SCAPSA, Pine Island, Beaverbrook, Montecello, and the new beautiful ones that Forest lake just built. They don't have to take up much space, they could be built by adding dirt instead of digging, they could be (due to their small size) be fitted with overhead baffles the complete length ( ) to conform to whatever future codes OGC is going for. In fact, that would make them even more popular, since they could be used is all types of inclement weather, for all types of activites (action shooting, defense training, PTC classes, force on force classes, etc).

I personally would either convert the 50 yrd into three pistol bays, or extend the short range back/ to the side and make a couple more. Best idea? Tear down the trap range.

That being said I know that oakdale will probably never do this, dispute the large number of pistol aficionados it has, and has gained in the last couple years. So many that trying to shoot on the short range (even during member only time) is like going to the mall on black friday. And I realize that OGC is dealing with a lot of issues already, and how it needs to protect it's golden goose (public shooting).

Anyway, dont' mind us, we're just bitching. You guys are doing a great job though and we appreciate that.

In the far distant future, would there be room for a longer rifle range?

Snow - I think know what you mean. I also think you'll be pleased with the short range enhancements (many more shooting positions, real overhead cover, etc) that the group has come up with. There will be renderings available, I believe, at the meeting next week.

As you know, I'm primarily a pistol guy - and I'm really happy with what they have come up with for the short range.

First set of 3D colored renderings was done yesterday, look pretty cool, but the various elements like stuctural steel and baffles have to have different colors so you can make sense of it, so corrections have already been sent back to the Architect.

With provisions for plates at 11 yards, too, I hope.

Have you ever considered a bullet resistant transparent dome encasing the entire range? It would reduce the sound to almost nothing outside of the range. It would allow natural light in while keeping inclement weather at bay. The chance of a round escaping would also be close to zero.

The construction would also give the range positive media attention with it's futuristic design.

I know you're joking, but I'll say it anyway. Anything even close to that would get closed down before the ink on the blurprints dried because it would violate the Minnesota Clean Air Act with any sort of enclosed space keeping all the lead and powder gases trapped inside. Plus the snow load issue, which turned the Dumpty Dome inside out on several occasions.

Dude, all we need is lots of venmar's for air exchange and Rainex on the dome to let the snow slide off. Duh.
