MTKA Game & Fish has historically done a new shooter orientation day for those folks that would like to give action shooting a try. Last time I helped out with it it was pretty neutral between USPSA and IDPA. You get a crash course on the rules for both sports and shoot a few simple stages in the afternoon while receiving some coaching.

I haven't heard a word on if they are going to do it this year, though.

You can shoot IDPA or USPSA several times a week from April to October and there is almost always a match on the weekends. It dwindles during the winter and some of it moves indoors but we do do some winter outdoor shoots, too.

Also, you do not need a fancy gun to shoot IPSC/USPSA. In fact, Production division is a very popluar division and the equipment rules are similar to IDPA rules.

By the way, you can't go wrong with a G17 for steel, IDPA, USPSA production, 3-gun, and GSSF. It works for all of them.

There are some really good shooters inthis area that you can learn from and from experience - the steel shoots in Hutch are the most bang for your buck to get your feet wet - $10, a good time, relaxed, and informative.

SHooting steel is a whole different thing and this is a great way to get the hang of it.

Kurt just advised no training class this year at Minnetonka. Our Twin Cities board is meeting next week and may schedule an IDPA only new shooter class at Beaverbrook. There will be small charge to cover our expenses and make a little for the club.

All we really require at Twin Cities is the ability to demonstrate to a CSO that you can draw safely from the holster and move and shoot safely with your gun from a variety of positions. If you need holster training Don Larson does an excellent class as does Bills and several other PPOTH NRA certified instructors. Jon and I also offer holster training and have a $95 class from 9 to noon on 3/28 at Inrange in Monticello. Big surprise that we also cover IDPA rules and procedures for interested shooters as part of the holster class. We do not teach holster draw as a club (or plan to) and adopted this simple vetting process to assure that we know folks are safe before they get on the range with our friends.

Thanks again for all the replies. It looks like I've got enough information to give me some stuff to think about and getting the ball rolling on getting involved. I can't wait for the first steel shoot. You can look for me, I'll be the guy in last place.

Thanks for the heads up. I do practice drawing from both IWB and OWB holsters frequently but a little formal training is never bad. I'll look into it.

+1 Amazing class, I went from a 10 second El Presidente drill at the beginning, to a 6 second at the end.

You can Register for the class here... if you're interested.

I'm an USPSA shooter and although it is a little faster paced and more gaming involved than IPDA it is an excellent forum for a beginner. They have enough variety in classes that you can shoot just about anything and the majority of the folks are very helpful in guiding yoy through the process. Nothing against the IPDA folks but I owuld say the two sports are different not really a better/worse for either. As someone who tried to do both I can tell you I'd not advice that path, hard to switch rule books as your learning.

I would agree the steel shoots are good, although I'm not sure they are a great teaching platform.

Check out the St Cloud Practical Shooters group, they are a great club, their range is really closer to clearwater. They have a tuesday night league during the non winter months and are a great group to shoot with. They got me started and the ladies in the group are getting my daughter hooked, she currently runs a 40cal in limited class and they have her do reloads on the move and scoring mostly A hits.

I know this is an older thread but since the shooting season is getting into full swing i thought i would post some shooting events for people who may have not made up thier minds or want to get into action shooting. Your choices are primarily IDPA or USPSA. IDPA is real world senarios, defensive in nature. USPSA is less realistic, more rounds and movement and you will frequently encounter moving targets. http://www.uspsa.org Watch the video and you will see what it's about. Any gun that you can use in IDPA you can use in USPSA but not the other way around. One is not better than the other and many people shoot both. In USPSA there are more divisions and even though you may be on a squad with an "open" shooter you will only be scored against people in your division.

Minnetonka game and fish Wed night league (uspsa) starts today. http://www.mgfc-mrc.org
Saint Cloud Tue night league (uspsa) is underway now and runs 24 weeks in three 8 week sessions. you can shoot only one or as many as you want. nothing to join. just show up and we will get you set up. $10. 3 or 4 stages 80 to 100 rounds. Free burgers and pop after. http://www.scapsa.org
Both cater to new shooters and are designed to introduce people to action shooting. You don't have to join USPSA or the club to participate. Anyone can shoot, even minors with a parent present.

Other events throught MN. http://www.mnuspsa.org

Happy Shooting
