What's available for Disabled Shooters?

Postby BigDog58 on Sun Jan 27, 2013 4:33 am

Hi all, I love to shoot both Pistol and Centrrfire Rifle. Is there any Competitions for someone with Mobility Limitations?
I can walk short distances with the aid of a cane. Unfortunately (for me) I must use my Strong Side hand on the cane. I must use a wheelchair for longer walking areas. I would love to be able to shoot something with either my Glock-17 in Pistol Comp or my Weatherby 30/06 in Centerfire Rifle Scoped , no iron sights
Any advice is very much appreciated. I miss having some sort of competition.

USPSA attempts to make accommadations withing safety obligations.

Here is a link to a short coversation ont he subject. Your best bet would be to contact USPSA or IPDA directly and explain your specific abiliites and I'm sure they would gladly give some direction which could be coordinated locally with whatever club RO you decide to shoot at. I would give the local club a heads up so they can prepare for you.

I think the biggest issue they will have is movement once you draw the gun and how that is done safley. Mag locations and such should be easy to take care of.

Thank you very much. I will look into it. I just don't want to become a burden on them. I'll see what can be done easily.

Every July there is a GSSF Match at Oakdale Gun Club for Glock shooters only. This would be perfect for you !!

it's more hunting opportunities than shooting competitions but still a fantastic organization to belong to.

Another consideration is shotgun sports like skeet and trap. I'm not a slouch when it comes to those but I'm getting my lower backside handed to me on a regular basis from guys in wheelchairs. It's nothing short of amazing how they shoot doubles on the 27 yard line.

Thank you all. I'm very interested in the Glock shoot in July. Is it open to non-members? Do I need a reference to be able to shoot in it and what type of competition is it?

I'm also extremely interested in the hunting suggestion. I moved here in 2002 and became disabled in March 2003. I used to hunt deer a great deal before moving here but haven't been able to hunt in more than 9 yrs. and I miss it very very much.

I'm not too interested in the Skeet or Trap right now. I hope tocconcentrate on Rifle and Pistol shooting mostly. I have two Mossberg 500's. One is currently setup for home defense and the other has a Slug Barrel and scope on it, as I was hoping to get to deer hunt this past season. However, the person that promised to take me with him, never came through. I have a popup ground blind that I can put mjy wheelchair in, I just needed a place to hunt and a little help getting my blind setup. I guess he didn't expect me to take his offer seriously. He is a friend of a k member and has avoided seeing me since deer season.

I highly recommend Cable Partners. I used to date a girl whose dad was disabled (still keep in touch with him!) and he was a very active member. Got to go on some 4wheel rides with them, great group of individuals!!
