Great class, if you missed out we are having half day class October 16th $75, a one day CFS class October 17th $175 and the ful 2 day Combat Focus Shooting course November 6 and 7, 2010 $350. Here is a review from one of the students last weekend.

I've been a big fan of Rob Pincus and Combat Focus Shooting for a number of years, and I recently had a chance to complete the two-day Combat Focus Shooting course with Jon Abel and Jeff Mullenmeister, two CFS certified instructors. 1,000 rounds and 140 reloads later, the CFS philosophy moved from theory to practice. This is not a course for the timid - by the end of the two day course, even the most hardened and experienced students were passing a roll of athletic tape to wrap their hands that were beaten raw by the volume of fire. The CFS course and philosophy are based upon the premise that the body and mind will undergo a series of automated responses to a lethal threat. Every course of fire, including the "SEB Drill," the "Colored Number Drill," the "Figure-Eight Drill," and others, are designed to reinforce a skill set designed to match those automated responses, rather than trying to override them.

Unlike other advanced courses I've attended, the CFS coaches were constantly engaged, walking the line, making individual adjustments and suggestions, and providing on the spot photographic and video reviews. The volume of fire in this course was also incredible - these were not the typical range exercises where 2 - 3 magazines were fired per drill, and then back to the classroom for a review. In this course, the range is the classroom, and each drill ate up hundreds of rounds and dozens of reloads, effectively baking those skills into our brains. Another element that separates the CFS course from others, is that the instructors always kept us off balance - until the commands were issued, we had no idea which target, where on the target, or how many rounds or reloads would be required to satisfy that stage. The instructors described that approach as necessary to avoid having us "choreograph" each stage, which sets this course apart from "gaming" that most of the shooters were familiar with, and closer to a real world critical incident.

If you've been thinking about investing in one of the many advanced pistol courses, give Combat Focus Shooting a try. In two days, you'll receive more coaching and fire more rounds than you'd fire in a comparable four-day course, and the great news is that you can take the CFS course in your home state of Minnesota or Iowa. Every student left the course not only more confident and capable, but we also left as true believers in the CFS philosophy.

I was fortunate enough to participate in this class with Jon last weekend. I had a great time. Jon did an excellent job. I also had an opportunity to meet and shoot with Michael. Despite my slide stop flying from my 1911 half-way through the first day, I had an excellent time. I can tell you that 1000 rounds for 45 in two days can be a bit hard on the hands. There is a big difference between the skill set I've cultivated gaming, and the CFS techniques Jon teaches. Old habits die hard, but they stuck with me, gave me personal attention even took and offered pictures of what I was doing wrong and how to correct them. I Had an absolute blast.

Jon,

I checked your website and maybe missed it, could you tell us a little bit about yourself. I took Rob's 2-day class at Bill's a year or so ago and thought it was great.

thanks

I'm not sure how often Jon checks the forums, but I will try to give a little bit of background.

Jon is an ex military MP, got is his start as an NRA instructor, then went the MADFI route and started teaching PTC carry. He went through Robs instructor course for CFS around a year ago. I've been working with Jon and helping out with his PTC courses for about 2 years now or so. I don't know if my vouching for him will utlimately hurt or help him on this forum, but there it is. I'll send him a note telling him to follow up.

I'd agree with Bessy that the course wasn't just a torture test for the students, it was also a torture test for our handguns. Many of the guns that had operated perfectly for their owners previously, started to show where they needed to be tightened up by the second day. The rear sight and magwell on my 1911 were knocked out of position by the second day, and other students saw similar parts working their way loose.

Sorry, I put something in the intro section thatwent like this, I am also a USPSA member with a twist.
Hello everyone. I have heard a lot about this place, know many of the members here, hear it referenced many places by many people so decided I should make time to be here. I reside in South Eastern Minnesota. Not much into pedigrees, but here you go. NRA Firearms Instructor with certification in Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Personal Protection in the Home, Home Firearms Safety, Range Safety officer, Combat Focus Shooting Instructor, MADFI member, Military Police Veteran, NRA Endowment Member, Board member Pine Island White Pines Sportsman’s Club as well as member of 4 other Sportsman’s’ club, treasurer of the Bluff View Friends of the NRA, DNR Volunteer Firearms Instructor. That is most of the gun stuff. I am working on getting carbine certified. I enjoy power sports and hunting with the nephews.

The fun was all mine having great shooters like you, Michael and the other students. That is why I love being an instructor, I get to meet such motivated and driven people.
