Looking for a good Situational Awareness class

Postby yukonjasper on Mon Oct 15, 2012 9:56 am

Looking for a good course that I could send my GF to (maybe me too). She visits clinics and hospitals around the Metro - think Phamacutical Rep. - and finds herself faced with some rather sketchy people in some not so great areas of the Metro. I think she could benefit from a couse that teaches situational assessment, threat assessment and tactical thinking for exiting or avoiding bad situations. She has asked me to research this for her and has expressed interest in maybe carrying a pistol - but she is a long way from that.

Are there any instructors that have these courses that don't rely heavily on weapons training? She is not anti-carry but is not at all familiar with firearms so I don't think we want to go to something that is centered around weapons.

My thought is to get her to a class to give her the street smarts and then get her to a Women's only firearms introduction class I've seen posted here from time to time. If she can get comfortable with a gun, maybe we can work to carrying.

I don't want to pretend I know it all or that I'm a good instructor, so I'd rather sheand I learn from a professional. I would likely be attending the SA class with her, so I'm motivated to find one that would work for both of us if possible.

Thanks in advance for recommendations or comments.

I teach Refuse To Be A Victim. The curriculum is about mindset, awareness, and practical techniques requiring little to no training. There is discussion of self defense and "personal protection devices," but there is no training in how to defend yourself or how to use the devices. There are always discussions of the pros and cons and the amount of training needed to use each effectively. Many instructors will often refer students to themselves or others for followup training or product sales (for example, some instructors sell pepper spray or other defense items).

TTS's class looks like it includes defensive techniques. Which would be better all depends on what you/your girlfriend hope to get out of the class. Refuse To Be A Victim probably touches on a wider array of topics and would appeal to someone who's nervous about getting hands on with defensive topics. Whereas TTS's class appears to be more focused in its content as well as hands on.

Take a look and PM or email me with questions.

Thanks for the honest assessment of the two courses!

Refuse To Be A Victim is also a great course and you can't go wrong with either one.
