I provide firearms safety and marksmanship training on a pro bono basis. Individual or small group coaching sessions can be scheduled by email to glock.ipod@gmail.com, or see my public range trip calendar for more informal shooting. Cost to you is your range fee (usually $5 for a shared lane), ammunition, and targets.

Depending on level of experience, I usually start new shooters out with about an hour of safety instruction and familiarization at the kitchen table. This involves learning how guns work mechanically and the basic rules of handling guns safely. This removes the mystery from firearms; the shooter knows exactly what the gun will do. After that, we head to the range for an hour or two, starting out with easy stuff like .22 rifle and .22 pistol, learning the basics of stance and grip, then trying some common larger caliber firearms, both handgun and rifle.

I'd be interested in an evening at Bill's North when ever you get an evening. I'm a last minute planner though.

Had a great time with glock+ipod at the range tonight despite having a gun pointed at us TWICE by THE SAME GUY. :o

Thanks to glock+ipod, I've now got a new grip to work on. I'd recommend anyone new to shooting get in on this great opportunity.

I've heard and experienced that at the south campus. Yours is the first report of it happening at the north one, that I've heard... :(

The first time, the guy was setting his pistol pointing at us on a sitting bench. The second time, he'd just finished a string of fire and turned around, sweeping our side of the room.

In the first case, I went over and discussed appropriate range etiquette. In the second, I was a bit more direct in addressing the problem, moving to the side and getting close enough to him to make him point it down and away if necessary. It's scary how fast bad stuff can happen.

I took him over to my lane and had him practice loading one round in the mag, racking the slide, shooting, and setting the pistol back down for a while, all without sweeping the room and using proper trigger finger discipline. He had a bad attitude about it all through. In retrospect, I should have asked the range officer to escort him out after the first incident. He wasn't quite right in the head, and his friends shouldn't have brought him to the range without proper instruction, much less allow him to shoot without standing within contact distance of him.

The guy had a good excuse though, "It's not loaded!"

In retrospect, we really should have had him tossed, especially after the second time, but glock+ipod saw it as a teaching opportunity and tried to help the guy out. Somehow, I think it was lost on him.

Yep; it was either ask to have him tossed or try to make him understand the seriousness of what he'd just done. Partly because he claimed to be a permit holder, I opted for the latter. You can't always win, and there are some who cannot or will not be taught. At least we all left without injury.

On a more positive note, the young lady of the group was very apologetic about Mr. Sweeps behavior and thanked me for stopping him. She displayed safe gun-handling and great aptitude for shooting.
