Recommended shooting instructor

Postby Grgkng on Sat Nov 12, 2011 9:09 pm

Hello,

I am located near Stillwater, MN. I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good shooting instructor that can do 1 on 1's to help me with basic shooting skills, tactical shooting, and just becoming a better shooter overall. I would like to get into competitions some day.

Thanks!

I've been to several of Don Larson's classes -- DonL here on the forums or http://mncarrypermit.com/

I'll 2nd Don Larson as an instructor....but then I think just about anyone on this board that has taken a class from Don would say the same thing.

I haven't taken a class from BLue Line Defense yet but since I shoot with some of their instructors every now and again I would say they would be a good choice as well.

Some of the great things about Don I have noticed compared to dozens of other classes/instructors I have used:

- He listens to you. When you meet some instructors, it is their way or no way.
- He knows his stuff
- He has non-drill sergeant style of teaching

There's probably tons more stuff, but that is what I remember. Just note that whoever you take on as your instructor, their way is not always the right way. It may be better than what you may know now, but if you can incorporate what was beneficial from these classes for you into your style that works and that is safe, that is money well spent for training.

I don't recommend shooting an instructor.

I don't think solidgun was make a blanket statement on all instructors.

I took it as a comment based on his personal experience, or in other words, some of these so called GOOD instructors were not that good in his opinion. Seems like a fair observation. 8-)
Unless he was talking about me.......

I will also give a thumbs up to DonL.

tom (AKA ttousi), Paul (phorvick) and donL are all highly competent instructors you could contact. Paul is out of state though until spring.

I don't think that was intended the way in which you are taking it.

I went to a DonL class two summers ago. He couldn't break me of my modified Weaver stance. And Lord knows, we worked at it.

I'll be going to another. And trying again.

(maybe if he yells at me a lot and calls me a little girl, that will help :D )

Sorry, but know more good DI's who don't yell during marksmanship training than those that do. BRM was probably the most low keyed portion of basic. They were thorough, clear, concise and to the point. Taking a LOT of non-shooters from nothing to excellent marksman. Pistol and rifle.

Don hasn't gone after my modified Weaver stance, but let my weak hand index finger creep up in front of the trigger guard and I was gonna hear it. :)

I meant that one is provided an environment where suggestions and feedback can be made so discussions can follow in order to tailor one's own learning. Not sure how I offended someone by providing my opinion from my personal experience.
