motorcylce safety class

Postby Spartan on Sun May 04, 2014 7:16 pm

I just completed a 2 day motorcycle safety class to get my endorsement. I have not ridden much since the 1980s and wanted a bike .... so I took the class
from Rider academy in St PAUL ...... http://rideracademy.com/

the class was fun ( we rode 4-6 hour a day) informative ( life long tips and discussion from the instructor) and enjoyable ( 5 students and an instructor= we talked about guns, bikes, cars , chicks and bows. I passed the test .... improved my skills and gained some confidence on the bike..... I learned a healthy respect for the bike too ........... anybody planning to get your license I recommend Rider Academy ... Jed was awesome ....They teach some advanced classes .... I may take one in future ...

Did they teach "reverse steer" for quick lane changes?

Spartan, which class did you take and what was your total out of pocket expense for the class?

Most of those courses, including the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, are excellent.

Congrats! What are you riding? I currently ride a 2006 Yamaha Warrior.

I'm sure these classes are excellent, but I didn't want to give up a whole weekend so I just practiced and took my exam after work one day.

I drove a couple different motorcycles for ~3 years before taking any formal training. No accidents, tickets or any real safety / handling issues. The class I took dramatically increased by my skill & comfort level on my bikes and almost certainly saved my butt more than once in the years since - I highly recommend these classes to anyone who rides.

After forgetting to renew my motorcycle license during 20+ years of riding, I took the exam and driving test in order to re-get my motorcycle validation on my drivers license. Still don't know why it wasn't updated each time I renewed my drivers license. Anyway I took the exam on Thursday and immediately signed up for riding exam on following Tuesday. I showed up on my street-legal KTM530EXC, the only off-road orientated bike there, and the first to pass the test after watching about 7-9 crash thru various portions of test. No wheelies allowed, but examiner did not like my stoppie (rear wheel off the ground under hard front wheel braking), made me re-do that portion of test. First time he had ever seen that he said, and the first time anyone showed up on a bike with street-legal knobbies for tires. It was very entertaining to watch people try to pass the test, most should not be on the road at all. The 510cc of my bike qualified me for "Large displacement", whatever that involves.
I don't like riding on-road that much, but do enjoy back country roads, gravel or dirt roads. I had a streetbike back in 1980's, put over 220,000 miles on it in 4 years, had a hit&run car driver run me into guard rail in Chicago which destroyed the bike as he held it against railing ( I jumped off bike before hitting guardrail hard, landing in grass safely, extremely sore. Yes I was wearing leathers, boots, gloves, & helmet.) Driver of car was never found.

Some of the techniques really need to be taught. As adults, we feel we can pick up most things on our own but with Motorcycles there's a few things that don't work the way we expect them to. If you aren't taught them, you probably will never learn them and have to "lay 'er down" instead of avoiding an accident. Some are just nice to know when maneuvering thru a parking lot or needing to make a u-turn without waddling back and forth.

Jed is an excellent coach. His business is something I have looked at.
If your thinking of riding or just want to brush up on skills. Take a class. Its money well spent.
