Never shot competition events ?

Postby hunterkev on Sun Apr 10, 2011 9:06 am

Hello, I have been around the block shooting firearms. Mostly rifles but have started shooting handguns more lately. Self defense CCW training and the like, Have interest in the steel shoots. I have a guess as to what it might involve but not sure. Any advise as weapons, distance, skills needed to get involved? It sounds like a good way to learn and shoot. Thanks for any info Kev. PS Whats the St. Cloud event?

here's a place to start reading.

http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/ServiceRifle.htm

Follow a bunch of the links there and you will get some great information

Gopher Rifle and Revolver also have a service rifle clinic in the spring too. Post 435 does as well and will show you a lot of what happens at those clinics as well.

http://www.mrra.org/clubevents.htm
http://www.post435gunclub.org/cmp.htm
http://www.grrc.org/events/matches/

I bought a couple of old parachutist weapons cases and use them for shooting pads. They were cheap.

Learn how to shoot with a sling. This is why you really need a free float tube on a mouse gun if you use a sling properly. You will flex the barrel in a big way.

Learn position shooting.

Mouseguns seem to be ruling the range right now. Just ahead of the M14.

A Good spotting scope. 60X seems to be a decent power, 80X if you go out further past 600 yards. You can also get a 6X or 8X eye piece for a 10X scope if you buy the right one.
Kowa scopes were what I saw the most of on the range.

Do good at a bunch of matches and you will get addicted to it bad. And also understand that 600-800 yard shots are more realistic than people give them credit.

Read some of the information at Fred's. Some good reading there.

You can also get an "inexpensive" shooting coat there. But I think you can find better other places really. See champion of Shooters connection links.

If you are wanting to get into the pistol stuff,
Ammo, ammo and more ammo.

A good carry holster, I prefer http://www.RMholsters.com stuff.

Mag pouches that won't dump your mags on the ground.

and a desire to have a good time.

Not my video, just more of the same.

If you haven't already, you can go here to read about the steel shoots.

It's a great intro to handgun competition and it's super fun. Hey that's a good lookin' guy in that last video.

First steel match is next Saturday! If you have a centerfire handgun and a couple hundred rounds of ammo you're set.

Nonsense, you don't need practice if you have the excuse of no practice!

You don't need any stinking practice. I suck and I still went to the Thursday night deals and I am going to try and make as many steel shoots as I can. I get very limited range time. I can go to matches or practice not both. I go to the matches there to much fun to miss.

The steel shoots in Hutch are the best way to start.

But since you asked, this Saturday is SCAPSA's spring shoot. (Unfortunately it's the same day as the steel shoot)
http://www.scapsa.net/

Some people find it a bit overwhelming to jump right into a weekend USPSA match for their first experience. Depends on what you are comfortable with but you do have to start somewhere. Many people come and watch a match before doing anything.

If you're from the St. Cloud area the easiest way to get going in USPSA is to shoot Tuesday night league at SCAPSA. The first night is April 19th and they are typically more easy going than the weekend matches. Cheaper, too.

SCAPSA is a USPSA club. Here's a quick little crash course on USPSA.

Yeah, but I shoot with THIS hand.

Yes and no. This past weekend I just heard that they are allowing handgun use on one of the ranges, again. They had to install baffles so you cannot see blue sky from the firing positions.

I haven't been there but I think the 200 yards range is still closed but some of the others are open to a certain degree and they have a range officer at all times.
Yeah, but I shoot with THIS hand.

You can shoot all the regular stages no problem; the management will gladly bump you ahead in line if necessary, and it likely won't be necessary depending on how many folks show up. But you'll probably miss the Man v. Man at the end, which is the extra super fun.
