I would like to address a possible concern many of you may have in regards to this event. I received a pm from a member voicing their concern about mixing firearms and alcohol, a concern I also share. For the most part we are all mature adults and I have to think the same thought has crossed your minds as well. We need to be setting the example of safe firearms handling and we would like this to be a family event and there may be some attending that are not as familiar with firearms as we say we are.

For those who have not been to Beaverbrook the picnic tables and grills are a little distance away from the rifle and pistol bay's. The shooting bay's also have fencing around them with gates a very clear no cross zone. Outside of the shooting bay's the property will be a cold range (no loaded firearms). Within the bay's you may load at the firing point when your ready to shoot. We will have a safe area for if you arrive with a hot gun (loaded) you may unload in this area only and the reverse when you are leaving the property. If you are going to show off your BBQ gun do it at this safe table only. No ammo is to be displayed or handled at this area. I have no problem with the gun in the holster with the mag out or cylinders empty and hammer or striker down. The shooting will be completed and shut down before any alcohol consumption. If you consume alcohol during the event please do not load back up when you are leaving in fact we will insist on this while you are on the property. If you won't attend because you can't carry a loaded firearm, maybe we could station armed guards at the entrance........

This is a developing event so please share your thoughts, my wife and I will not be drinking alcohol so if the majority feels this way I'm perfectly OK with it.

I'm really open for suggestions, my thoughts are its one thing to meet at a bar, there it's given that everyone is responsible for themselves. This somewhat organized and we are the guest at this range, in the event something did happened it would not fair well for anybody involved. There is no possible way of making everyone happy, so what can we do to get the most interest in this event? The hope is that there will be kids there, what message is being sent by grown men walking around with a beer in one hand and their pistol in the other. hammAR I hope you don't take this personally you have more gun handling experience then any 60 of us members, I feel an event like this has to take in account the least experienced people attending. You must know someone you wouldn't trust with a firearm stone cold sober.

Oh yes, we can be trusted at all times except at this gathering.

I fully understand the above when it comes to shooting and range rules, especially during competition or even playing on the range. But to say I cannot carry at the event, with me not shooting, touching or doing any show and tell, just my defensive weapon hiding discreetly under my cover garment, doesn't work for me. A person or business has every right to post their business or activity, so do what you feel needed, I think the Minnesota carry law is very good in this aspect in recognizing property rights, which I full support. People that know me either personally or by my post on forums on mixing alcohol and firearms, know that I am the least of their worries. Since I will will respect your rights and wishes, no armed guards needed, I will have to pass this time, maybe next time.

I'm sorry that it is coming to this, I have been very clear I'm looking for suggestions and volunteers for running this event. I don't really expect everyone will be happy with any rules outside of what they think is right. I have never setup an event like this before, so therefore I modeled it after something I was familiar with which is IDPA rules on gun handling. I'm not a trained Safety Officer and would be more then happy to turn it over to someone with much more experience then I. If you feel there is a better way of doing this please step up. Cobb I would trust you in any situation and if I knew only people of your experience and a lot of other people on the forum that I know personally would be the only ones attending then there wouldn't be any problems. But quite frankly I'm cutting my vacation short to be here for this event and its getting pretty close to not being worth it. So either people offer some suggestions or someone else will be doing it, I don't need or want the headache. I have volunteered my time and donated door prizes for this event and only one other person has stepped up and this is suppose to be for the forum. So it now in the hands of the members of this forum to sort out what they would like to happen at this event, I tried and failed it appears, so offer away..................

I guess I should have just said I wouldn't make it instead of explaining why.

As far as - Oh yes, we can be trusted at all times except at this gathering, comment, that was not directed at Ron, that was directed at the person that PM'd the concerns of alcohol at the gathering. That almost sound like a comment an anti would make, assuming the worst from permit holders and that they cannot discipline themselves. I am in bars weekly carrying, just don't drink because I am carrying and assume other responsible permit holders will do the same, so I see alcohol at any gathering a non issue.

Ron and rucker,

Since I started this "drift" I would suggest that you lock or eliminate this thread and start a new one, fresh and clean.....

maybe a shoot FOLLOWED by a family oriented BBQ ...... ;)

My suggestion Westberg is dont listen to these old coots and TELL them the way it is. If they or anyone else doesn't like it they can piss up a rope.

I wont be there not because of rules but because it sounds like Hamster is going to be there and I dont like him.

OK we have hammAR straightened out, yesterday at the Steel Shoot I had my son give him a little lesson in respect............   I do like hammAR's suggestion that we hold the shooting event from 2 pm to say 5 pm and start getting ready for preparing the food say 6 pm on for socializing and eating until 9 pm, we have the facility from 2pm to 9 pm (rucker please correct me if I have the times wrong). We have room here to adjust as needed.

The thought here is that you can come for the whole shebang, just the shooting or the socializing. I did have some forum members yesterday offer to help, thank you. The rules for guns and alcohol that we will be following will be the rules of Beaverbrook and the State of Minnesota. We are all adults as I was reminded and therefore if you notice anything unsafe address it as you see it. If you have questions please ask and again if you have suggestions offer them up.

Some suggestions on the shooting is have one open bay with targets, one bay with a table of different types of handguns, rifles and shotguns to try out and then one bay the turkey shoot where we have one 22 rifle everyone shoots the same rifle and closest to center bulleyes with a shoot off if needed, adult distance and kids distance. Maybe charge a $1.00 a shot and a prize for the men, women and kids. Thoughts about this................. :?:
