First MNGUNTALK Homebrew event FINALLY BOTTLED

Postby Stradawhovious on Sun Sep 21, 2008 11:54 am

I'm planning on hosting a MNGUNTALK brew event, and have room for probably 6 others based on the fact that my house is the size of a shoe box. If you are interesting on seeing a VERY high level overview on what is involved in getting started with a fun new hobby, or just want to get together for an afternoon and talk beer and guns (and to make it the trifecta tobacco) this would be a good afternoon. There will be no cost involved, but will eat up a Sunday afternoon in South Minneapolis.

For those of you whare are asking... "Where did this come from?" please see this post http://mnguntalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=4423

One of my favorite quotes from Ben Franklin was:

“Beer is a sign from God that he loves us and wants us to be happy.”

I cannot go against Ben on this!

I am so up for this. I just brewed a batch last night and bottle 11 gallons of mead this morning.

I can bring some equipment and knowledge.

What are the plans? Several different batches? One giant batch? Is this a buy in type thing where whomever puts money in gets a portion of the results?

I want to be there, but I've got two kids having birthdays next month and halloween is coming up. I can't make promises, yet.

At this point, I figured we would start with a simple 5 gallon batch, no frills, no fuss, no muss. Donations would be welcome, but not required as ingredients aren't rediculously expensive, but not free either (Vlad has already graciously donated two pounds of REALLY good honey :D ). This to me is more of a learning experience for those that haven't brewed than anything else. We can figure out when and where to taste the results while we are brewing. :D

But Melted, if you have a wort chiller it would come in handy...............

Any Sunday works for me, I voted for the 28th purely because it's the soonest, because this sounds cool, even though I'm probably too lazy to start doing it myself. I am am intrigued by the tech. Wort chiller??? Don't tell me, I'll learn there.

I am not sure that I have ever posted on this site. I have posted a few times on the TC Carry site under the same name.

Do you accept FNGs? (F...ing new guys?)

Any hooo.... Do you need a counter flow our an immersion?

Can I be there and do an all grain batch at the same time? My equipment is fairly portable and I am in South MPLS as well.

I am supposed to bring a batch for a hunting trip in a month, so.... I have to brew Sunday, but I might not be able to share this batch. But I would share a different batch. I see it this way, I rather brew with people I don't know than brew alone.

Have a good one,

I'm in the same boat. But I asked the Boss, "What do you think if I started to brew" and she said, "That'd be great, honey"...

Do we just show up, or should we bring something?

Bring a 6'er of your favorite beer?
I'll pass it by the boss and vote on a date. The 5th is right out, maybe the 28th though.
I can bring along a growler of homebrew (have you tried it yet Strad?)

Vetoed the 28th, and the 12th is the day before our anniversary so the likelihood of that is pretty slim as well.
Brew on. I'll work on the "hosting the next one" idea with her.

I can bring a counterflow wort chiller.

And Pat, it's not as exciting as it may sound, but it can turn a multihour process into a ten minute process.

All are welcome except those with alterior motives, but if you plan to come to my place with the intent of BG activity, I can safely assure you that it would be the wrong place to do it  But seriously, all are welcome. If Pat would be kind enough to attend, his presence would be extremely welcome, as I'm sure that everyone there would stand to benefit from his wealth of knowledge.

With the OVERWHELMING response of a whopping five votes (and one who is apparently anti ;) ), I have made an executive decision to host one on september 28th, and one on october 12th. PM me with dates you would like to attend and I will update the list on this post. Like I stated I am limited as far as space, but will host as many as possible. At the very least, it will be fun! Also, if anyone has a particular style they would like to start with, let me know! :D Donations to ingredients are not required but welcomed (overall cost is between $30 - $40) and I will make every effort to make sure everyone in attendance gets a helathy sample of the fruits of our labor (although you will have to wait a while to get it). I also think it would be fun if everyone brings a couple (or more) bottles of their favorite beer for sampling. And if anyone wants to bring munchables, that is welcome as well.

Sure! Provided I have what you need to get the job done. I think it would be a great experience for the newbies to see the easy (my way)way and the right way (your way) :D
