Could be fun, just be sure you read all the rules and any guns you bring meet the requirement. Curious that the modern service rifle DOESN'T allow optics. I wonder how many soldiers and marines today use a rifle in battle with iron sights. Zero?

I don't think the purpose of the match is to simulate a modern combat operation, rather to provide shooters a consistent and standard set of equipment + rules with which to compete against one another without allowing equipment to become a major crutch. The term "modern" simply refers to a rifle of the AR15/M16 family instead of the Springfield 1903, M1 Garand, etc.. that are also frequently encountered in competitive CMP matches.

I'm not sure why CMP doesn't allow optics. On a well defined target, unless you have very poor eyesight, there isn't any advantage to using them.

Anyone planning to shoot in this event who has not signed up should do so ASAP.
There is a risk of it being cancelled due to insufficient entrants, which would be a sad state of affairs.

CMP Cancels August Minnesota Games Event. The Civilian Marksmanship Program has canceled the 2015 Minnesota CMP Games event scheduled for August 19-23 at the Gopher Rifle & Revolver Club near the city of Harris. "Unfortunately, registrations for the matches and clinics are falling short of our expectations and it's necessary for us to redirect our resources in August," said Christie Sewell, CMP's Programs Chief. "We thank the management of the Gopher Rifle & Revolver Club for organizing the event, but sometimes our best laid plans do not pan out," she said. Refunds will be provided to all competitors who registered and paid for the event in advance.

The games have been scheduled since spring.

It would appear failure was because publicity and promotion were much too little, way too late.

Non of which is the fault of the OP, RVW.
