SCSA the sanctioning body of official steel shoot is placing targets at 21 feet. Roundabout and Smoke and Hope are both shot with the closest plates at 21 feet.

and with PCC that would have to start at 30 yards.

Just require body armor. Or have a notary public and a waiver to sign.

The point is that in SCSA they are shot as close as 7 yards with the PCC with no issues. But is your match, your rules. Personally, I am emphasizing PCC with the goal of going to nationals this year so it would be great if I could shoot it there and if not, I will go where I can.

Interesting. What bullets do they allow—do they require frangible ammo?

I have not encountered any ammunition requirements. I generally shoot 115gr and 124 grain Federal FMJ with no issues. I have not chrono'ed them out of my 16" barrel so I am not sure what speed I am getting.

I totally get that.

I am going to have to dust of the pistol and practice a bit before I hit your next one with it. I suck a whole lot less with the PCC.

With your average 9mm doing 1100fps out of a nominal 5 inch barrel, you can expect mv to increase by 1.9% per extra inch of barrel, or approximately 200 fps in a 16 inc barrel. Thi means targets would been to start the season at 15 yes and go back from there.

I have been running 3-gun, and helping run USPSA in pine island for quite a while. I can say with absolute certainty that this is NOT an issue. Thousands of USPSA matches have been run with PCC divsion, and we have had people shooting 9mm major for decades before PCC was introduced. People aren't getting tagged by ricochets, and falling over dead. The steel is not destroyed, and we don't have issues with it wearing out quicker. We keep track of steel deformation, and when they were last turned.

The difference for 115gr 9mm between a 5 inch barrel and 16 inch is about 100fps. You can see it yourself here. http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/9luger.html

Pistol powders especially those used in 9mm handgun loadings are optimized for shorter barrels. You don't see the sort of muzzle velocity increase with longer barrels like you would with rifle powder. By the time it hits 5 inches It's basically done burning.

It's your match, and if you don't want to have PCC because you want to keep it old school that's cool. I think however the fear that it's going to wreck your steel, or is some sort of safety liability is not based in reality.
