As far as I know (but I don't know much), the 10/22 and the Marlin .22s like the model 60 are the quintessantial Appleseed shooters. I'm planning to use my 10/22 but I believe it is open to whatever. I heard that many people shoot AR's, SKS etc too. I'm hoping somebody with actual experience in an Appleseed shoot can chime in on this...
I have a Colt Python and you don't so what do I care...

The Winona shoot in April is full according to the website. Check the bottom of the page.

They say you can on the site, but it doesn't sound like it is recomended.

What about your basic 10/22? This event seams to focus more on skills than the gun you are using.

You're right, you can use a bolt action but it is not recommended. We shoot Army Qualification Tests which are timed and required quick reloading. Many people use a 10/22, I'm going to be bringing mine as well as my AR.

There is talk of setting up an additional MN appleseed as the Winona one has sold out!

This is right. I have shot my AR at the last 3 appleseeds I went to. Appleseeders also love their M1 garands and m14s. ARs and SKS's are also welcome and semi-popular.

Remember, open sights are desired. Also, bring a sling. These slings are the Appleseed standard: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/MGR015-1.html Bring an extra, as some people won't have one!

One more thing.... Winona might be full, but Lodi, WI has openings!

I was asked not to give out the contact info for the Henderson range to random strangers on the internet for the time being. They've been having issues with folks shooting the target holders... There's chicken wire between posts to clip your targets to and people have been using the posts as targets instead of a $0.02 sheet of paper
