It does say this about the RULES FOR NEW 50 YARD RANGE.....
No jacketed bullets are permitted. The 3” steel, if hit with a jacketed round will be damaged or destroyed

That does raise a question for anyone who is interested in becoming a member there (like me) and what to use the rifle range.
So basically they are saying ANY of the very common FMJ ammo from Remington, PMC or Federal or others (considered plinking ammo) can't be used in rifles?!
One would have to have soft lead or other type rounds? Those are not cheap to buy factory or even seem all that common at the stores. (not that ANYTHING is at the stores)

I guess if the person was reloading, they can use what is required, but what about the people who use factory ammo? Seems like a pretty strict rule...or is this common at other outdoor ranges?
All I have right now in my stock is FMJ .223 that I wanted to use, but according to the rules. They are forbiden at Gopher. :(

Just wondering. Or am I missing something?

Hey Pat - I just popped in to the Walmart by Northtown (Springbrook) and they had one lonely box of .357 on the shelf! (well, right next to the two boxes of .357 SIG)

I didn't notice if they had anything other than .40 and 9mm at the Fleet Farm at 81 & 169...

Rules that make the most sense to preserve the shooting range over time. Go look at most private clubs...they are shot to hell by the members.....pretty sad state of affairs.
FMJ tend to bounce off stuff......intended or not......Start reloading soft point bullets........

That is something I plan to do. But at this point, I have an investment in the ammo I have NOW and wanted to use it. Guess not at that range.

This fleet farm had only 9mm and 40. If they had and .38s or .357 I would have bought some too.

The only pistol ammo I've seen at the 4 Wal-Marts I've been to in the last couple days was .357 SIG.

The FF in Oakdale had .38 Spcl for $9.98/box Blazer.
The Rogers Cabelas had Remington UMC for $17.99 a box on Tuesday (probably gone)

OK, last highjack of this thread from me.... ;)

I got this e-mail from a Gopher club representative......

xxxxxxx,
You panicked unnecessarily. :)
Those rules were for the new 50 yard range only. The 100 yard range has no
such restriction.

The new range was created mostly for .22 rimfire use. We expect that there
will be some pistol users and during the fall some guys will sight in their
shotgun slugs and black powder, but those lead slugs will be repelled (we
hope) by the steel.

We have had a good deal of damage on the original 50 yard range, which is a
section of the 100 yard range, with shooters intentionally (they must have)
shooting at the vertical standards. One season a few years back, some
shooters managed to completely cut off, four telephone poles that were at
least 20" in diameter. We assume that they did that just to see if they
could. It was wanton destruction and if they had been seen & caught, we
would have prosecuted. As a result, we are trying to make sure that the same
thing doesn't happen in the future.

So, renew your membership and plan to shoot your .223 on the 100 yard range,
as in the past.
Thanks for the question.

I guess I am happy with that answer. Sorry for the thread drift.
Carry on with the steel shoot update and .38sp search ;-)

Woohoo! Found Blazer .38 at the Brooklyn Park Fleet Farm so I'm all set, got enough ammo now for me and my son. Benny, hope you can run my son Ben through your holster mini-class.

BTW, the Brooklyn Park Fleet Farm has a bunch of aluminum Blazer. Also some Blazer Brass, but only 9mm and .40.

I could probably use a run through the rules as well (though I'm sure everyone gets a reminder), this will be my first steel shoot.

And, if all goes to plan, my fiance's first steel shoot (and also some of her first holster work, so if I can keep her willing to try shooting, she may need some friendly guidance on how things work). Better if she doesn't hear it from me.
