And a good time was had by all

Postby Seismic Sam on Sat Jan 05, 2008 2:46 pm

Well, the first blatantly open carry breakfast is in the books, and everybody seemed to enjoy it. Due to quite a few last minute acceptances, we wound up with nearly 50 people in the bar. While Cheri actually DID have enough food for everybody, the prep time took longer than expected, especially for seconds (BURP!), and I wound up scrambling eggs in the kitchen to help out. (Not the first time I've done that.) I think everybody got as much as they wanted to eat, and the sausage was really EFFEN good. George was even fairly courteous, which is unusual for him, but all the people standing on the bar had 1911's and Tupperware sticking out of them at various angles. so what the **** could he do?? :P

As far as atmosphere, yes, the EFFEN Gopher is not the St. Paul Hotel, but it did have one thing today that made it a special place to be. You could carry openly with complete freedom, and not worry about somebody spazzing out and calling the cops, or having some stranger try to grab your gun, (except for Cobb wanting to run off with my 50GI  ) or any of the usual emotional angst/paranoia that comes along with OC. It was a very wonderful and relaxed affair.

One other very unusual thing, which I wouldn't have believed until I saw it, was the reaction of some normal citizens who came in for coneys at 11:00 when the bar nominally opened. The place was still packed with about 45 of us, and the noise level was pretty high, and despite all the hardware hanging out everywhere I don't think anybody noticed. They could literally not see the trees for the forest. I was the last one to leave about 1, and I know a couple of people picked up on me as I was wandering around getting my stuff together.

Some people have asked about the possibility of a repeat event, and the first week in February is full because of the Winter Carnival. (The Gopher is the OFFICIAL Vulcan bar, BTW.) If anybody would like a repeat in March, however, I think Cheri would be up for it, and we'd know to start cooking the food 45 minutes earlier next time. Let me know if you're interested.

Mixed feelings about missing this one. Lady T's class was very good and well attended. On the other hand, sounds like I missed a good time in St. Paul. I'm defiantly interested in attending in March. :)

Had a great time, was nice to meet some of you guys in person! Most of my friend are not gun people, (OK, none of them are), so it was great to be around so many like minded folks.
Thanks for setting it up, and let's do it again in March. :D

I had a blast, and so did my dad, who was probably the only person there not carrying. I'm slowly working on him though, and I might get him to get his permit just for the ease of of doing other stuff. We'll see.

And those EFFEN coney's were so damn good I had four.

Yup-and hopefully the place made a few bucks for their effort. It might be tough to organize in the summer, yet a few times during the winter would be fun!

Thanks Sam for setting up an unusual and great time. It was fun to meet folks and put names with faces. The Effen Gopher looked like a staging area for a massive undercover raid.

Oh, meltedeyes your Dad wasn't the only one not carrying...I'm still waiting on Goodhue County for my permit. Next Gopher gathering I'll be carrying for sure.
