The First Bang Ping of the Year

Postby selurcspi on Mon May 13, 2013 5:09 pm

The Third Saturday is fast approaching and that means a Steel Shoot.

OK. What's needed
just like the Second rule of gunfights states......Bring a Gun!...... 9mm, .38, 41, 44, 45, will do the job.

Holster, not needed for a Tyro, but you cannot shoot Man v Man without one. The trigger MUST be covered.
Round count, in a perfect world 100 would suffice. If you have the slightest idea you might miss, bring more....lots more. I don't miss much but I still bring 200
Hearing protection, if you want to be able to talk with your grandkids bring it, learning sign language at 50 isn't easy.
Eye Protection, good quality sunglasses, safety glasses or prescription glasses are MANDATORY, they should wrap around the side or have side panels.
Think of your shooting glasses as your American Express Card, don't leave home without them. We're shooting at Steel, bullets shatter, pieces of them bounce.
Clothes...This is Minnesota, bring snow clothes, rain gear, sunscreen, shorts....you get the picture...be a boy scout.

If you believe the TV weather forecasters, we should have a nice day... Maybe

Hydration, bring something to drink, it may be hot (or cold) so bring water or something else.
Food, the town is six miles from the range and there are no facilities on site, bring some lunch, you might get hungry otherwise.
Start Time, Setup will be at 8:30, Shooting will start at 9:30.
COF, Four stages, each of 4 strings with the best three times to count. The winner will be the one with the lowest total time for the 12 runs.

$15 for Non Members, $10 for Members. (Gopher Campfire Club Members)
NRA, MADFI, MN DNR, Certified Instructor

As long as the wife is feeling ok. I will be skipping my last day of school to be there.

Sounds great. How long these usually run (so I can tell my wife when she'll get her nap in)?

What's the round count for a typical stage?

20 if you don't miss. 24 if Benny puts a bonus plate way out in the weeds.

That's very dependent on the turnout. I don't know the most there's been, maybe around 50, and I was at one freezing wet one when there was 13.

A big one runs well into the afternoon. I remember I was late to a 7pm wedding reception once, but I think that was because the guy I was riding with forced me to stop for a beer.

There's a lot of pent-up demand for this one I think, but I the other hand I'm seeing thunderstorms predicted, and there's a couple competing events. So... 3:25 PM. Plus or minus a couple hours.

I just realized I have to work that day. Of course I can do it from anywhere, as long as I have internet. If someone has a mobile hotspot I could multitask!

I'm looking forward to attending, but will likely need to skip the MVM depending on time. I'll need to get home at a decent time to tend to the dogs.

I'm kind of excited for this shoot.
-1st steel shoot of the year
-New gun I got a week ago
-1st time using a race holster
-Mags that I'm about 90% sure are going to function
-1st time competing with a gun that has a thumb safety
-It's either going to be a really good day or I might throw my gun in the lake.

Were you there the day I dumped 13 mags of 45 ammo on one stage with a pistol I had bought earlier that week? I still hope that no one DNF'd that stage. They would have had a penalty time of about 3 days. Paul's right bring the scuba gear
