Project Appleseed April 18th-19th in Winona

Postby whiskersoulstain on Sat Jan 10, 2009 2:30 pm

Hello All,

It is time for another Appleseed in Winona, MN.

What the RWVA (Revolutionary War Veterans Association) is all about:
The Appleseed Program is designed to take you from being a simple rifle owner to being a true rifleman. All throughout American history, the rifleman has been defined as a marksman capable of hitting a man-sized target from 500 yards away — no ifs, ands or buts about it. This 500-yard range is traditionally known as "the rifleman's quarter-mile;" a rifleman can hit just about any target he can see. This skill was particulary evident in the birth of our country, and was the difference in winning the Revolutionary War.

Haven't made the decision yet. I shot Rifleman, squeaking in at the 210 cutoff (scored 214 by the 30 cal rule), so they want me to instruct now. I'm not really comfortable instructing folks who have been shooting longer than I've been alive, or anyone else for that matter!

I'm open to providing some guidance for Appleseed practice if anybody is interested. I tend to shoot at Caribou down in Le Sueur, but the membership cost is high and the range fees are unreasonable for guests. A membership at the Henderson range is less than the cost of two trips as a non-member to Caribou, let me know if you want contact info. They've got about 70 yards to work with.

They charge for this?

Years ago when I took the training for hitting a man size target at 500 yards, they didn't charge me anything. ;)

Call me a yellow-bellied ***** foreigner if you want, but is this shoot outside? It just may be a tad chilly, especially laying prone in a snow covered field. I know that Winona is a bit closer to Mexico than the Twin Cities, but djeez...
I'm trying to click on the link for the info but I keep getting a 'Server Busy'-error. I would love to attend and I'll try to pull some other people in.

It's in April.

My guess would be yes. However, the snow is USUALLY gone by April, and temps are generally warm enough that you don't need anything more than a light windbreaker (if that).

A few shots of the range...

While you can certainly shoot a Mosin Nagant on a scrap of carpet like the 2 prone folks on the right, Midway has their shooting mat at half off ($25) until the end of the month.

Average high on April 19 is 62. Is 62 too cold for you to be outside?

I don't really care about averages. I remember shooting outside in April last year and there was snow on the ground, ice on the lakes and it was freezing still.
I bought my shooting mat anyway and I'm planning to attend, hopefully work will allow.

Winona is also a couple hours south of here. April in Winona is nice. It's usually when I go turkey hunting down there.

You can also stop in Wabasha at the Arrowhead Bluffs Museum: The Arrowhead Bluffs Museum has a complete collection of Winchester firearms, including every model of Winchester sold from 1866-1982. Other exhibits include mounted displays of North American wildlife and a collection of Native American artifacts.

Has anyone here gone to one of these with a bolt action gun?

They say you can on the site, but it doesn't sound like it is recomended.

What about your basic 10/22? This event seams to focus more on skills than the gun you are using.
