I think immigration will be the single biggest issue in the next election. After all, this last cycle proved that your average Joe American didn't give 2 sh*ts about the economy. The question is how do we address?
I don't know the answer. Mass deportations are impractical, not to mention the wrong idea. That said, I'm not sure Joe American will buy into the DREAM act. Would we apply an approach like this to any other instance of illegality?
Well, the DREAM act applies to kids who were brought here illegally by their parents. We generally don't charge children with crimes.
And once we get rid of the code words in the rest of the immigration debate and realize that the people coming across the boarder are generally socially conservative, hard working and otherwise law abiding citizens, I don't see the benefit of keeping them out. Business relies on them. It's one of the dumbest positions the republican party has taken in the past 12 years. Create a path to residency that puts them in line, allows them to remain here until they get to the front of the line, and charge them a $1000 fine for breaking the law (to get rid of that ridiculous "amnesty" code word), and there you go. 2014 will be all wrapped up in a nice brown bow.
