Why do they insist on making background checks so difficult? Why not just make the seller responsible for verifying and keeping a copy of the Permit to Purchase or Permit to Carry?

That would make most law abiding people comply with "universal background checks", plus eliminate the possibility of turning this bill into gun registration. No fees, no extra checks, just due diligence on the part of the seller. People on this board do it anyway.

Wouldn't that solve the problem that Senator Champion was so fired up about?

Why do you need any permission to exercise a right? Why would anyone feel the need/willingness to be burdened by the possible future acts somebody commits with an object?

I'm as stone cold sane, sober and law abiding as the next upstanding citizen. I pass everything with a flying colors. There's nothing in the PTP/PTC/NICs system that will "catch" me or anybody else on (or before) the day we lose our minds, get pissed of for the final time, etc.

If you really think 100% safety is the goal, then 100% confiscation is the only real solution. Anything less is semantics -- costly, ineffective, and about control- not guns.

If guns were gone, would people still kill? Yes.

If guns were gone, would people be able to defend themselves? Maybe. Some people could or would be able to, sure, but would some others be able to? No. Also, shooting someone is a far cry from getting up close and personal in-their-face to stab them or beat their skull in with a crowbar.

Which clip? I can clip video ;)

It was right around 7:40 tonight, so I guess that would be 1:40 into the hearings.

I was hoping to find it on youtube this morning, but nothing. :(

Sadly, the MN Senate site video's are not ipad friendly.

It's sad to see some FFL holders testify in favor of universal background checks. I really hope that none of them would desire a law requiring all private sales to go through an FFL, but I guess some can't resist the draw of more revenue.

I like that the chair was admonished by the gentleman testifying by stating a simple question.

"Mr Chair, do you need a second?"

Of course, the chair then warned him that if he dares ask the question again, he will be done. I still appreciate that he called the chair on his lack of interest in the citizen testimony. We citizens are more important than the chair.

I couldn't watch that part - was he asking for a point of order? I would think that would be allowed under any circumstances.

No, he asked the chair if he needed a second because the chair was rudely not paying attention.

There was then a STERN admonishment that he not attempt to ask such a question again.

That sounds priceless! Anyone have a link to that video and a timestamp?

Sometimes folks in positions of power take themselves a little too seriously. They have to remember they are there at the pleasure of the people they serve and they are working FOR the people of this state.
