Federal Cartridge--1500 Jobs--Should We Be Writing to Them?

Postby St. Olaf on Sun Feb 24, 2013 10:31 am

With Beretta, Magpul and others putting pressure on their state politicians......

What's Federal Cartridge doing?

If nothing......why?

I have read about proposed sanctions on firearms and ammunition feeding devices but I haven't seen any significant proposal to ban cartridges. I'm not saying that they don't have a dog in the hunt, just that they are not in the same position as LaRue, Magpul, Barret, et al.

IMHO, the use of coercive tactics against Federal at this time could result in an unintended consequence.

IANAL, YMMV and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Federal is ATK and ATK relocated to Virgina/Washington. They're really not a Minnesota company anymore.

Well, Beretta is using their 300 jobs in Maryland for leverage.

Anybody know how many jobs Federal still has in MN?

Really does look like they're still making ammo here.

Maybe they like the idea of a move to Texas.

Federal has ~1600 employees at this point working out of two locations in Anoka - they've made ammo in Minnesota for 90 years, and have no plans to go anywhere else. They are a wholly owned subsidiary of Alliant Techsystems (ATK) formerly based in Eden Prairie, now based in Arlington, VA.

They have supported conservation and firearms safety issues for 90 years, indeed they were the first company to do so....they created the colorized identification of shotshells - red for 12ga, yellow for 20ga, etc. along with other projects. They did conservation ads before conservation was "cool".

Rybak was wrong to pick on them - and wrong to say he spoke for law enforcement, as evidenced by the President of the Minneapolis Police Federation's letter to the Star Tribune denouncing Rabak's slander.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

I like how these politicians feel that they can speak for whomever they choose to add credibility to their stance.

Thanks.

With that many jobs they should be able to put some pressure on the legislature.

I was unaware of that until I read your post.

This is all news to me.

The strib refused to publish the letter.
I found it here

An excerpt:
Ironically, the mayor may soon discover that his leverage with Federal is non–existent. Currently the company has a production backlog that amounts to millions of dollars. Wal–Mart sells more Federal ammunition in a day than the Minneapolis Police Department buys in a year. The MPD is a tiny customer and it is a tribute to Federal’s customer service and friendship with the department that we get our ammunition without a wait.

Destroying this long–term relationship so the mayor can add to his “legacy” would be a terrific waste.

Instead, the POFM advocates taking the advice of a coalition of Minnesota law enforcement officials and concentrate on five areas where civilian and law enforcement leaders can make a difference.

This includes:
--Improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
--Provide Law enforcement access to already public court mental health records.
--Improve the procedures for inmate competency and civil commitment evaluations and treatment.
--Review Minnesota’s Civil Commitment Law.
--Assess the in-patient and out-patient psychiatric resources available to serve the mentally ill in Minnesota, including those in the criminal justice system.

Making these changes will have an immediate impact in Minneapolis and be far more effective than more publicity stunts and feel–good legislation.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for Federal (ATK) to make a political stand. ATK is not going to risk future lucrative military contracts by stepping on the toes of either political party.
I will never apologize for being an American.

Then again, the wars are winding down and that means a considerable downturn in ammo orders.

And I don't think we'll be declaring war on any more people who disagree with us any time soon.

Didn't work out real well for us, did it?

A better place than Federal would be DPMS in St Cloud. And what about Fleet Farm? The CEO there is most definitely on our side.

Magnum Research?

DPMS is "Freedom Group" - they also have larger Corporate fish controlling politics.

They DID send a large contingent of employees to the Capitol for the House Hearings - I saw those same people there for the Senate hearings as well!
