Tony Cornish to propose ALTERNATE GUN BILL ??? Huh.
Cruised to my Facebook page today and got a posting from GOCRA. It mentioned that waiting in the wings was an ALTERNATE GUN BILL from Tony Cornish.
I don't get it.
Great Idea.....be a contrarian....Fly your flag right in the face of the opposition....Get 'Ahead of your Opponent's OODA LOOP'.....Take the Offensive. but this has a snowball's chance in Hell of going anywhere....Right.

I love it....Always a fan of the UnderDog and any UnderDog strategy....but somebody tell me how this isn't a waste of time, practically speaking.

I do see the potential to take the stage and speak to the undecideds and get in the spotlight.....and maybe THAT'S the play....

Anybody know what's what here. :)

Umm, thats one way to look at it...

Did you not notice, that even DFL leaders are suggesting that their proposed legislation is in trouble? The alternative NRA/GOCRA backed bill will hopefully satisfy the political pound of flesh, and even better do something to address crime with guns.

Tony's one of the good guys. If there's a polititian out there that I would trust with my 2A rights, it's him.

I believe this is a way to do something that will really have an impact - as opposed to Paymar's bill which we know we won't do a thing to have any sort of impact.

I think this bill has a significant amount of support. But thats just what I'm reading in the press. Looks like it is being announced tomorrow.

From Rep. Tony Cornish:

Tomorrow Morning at 11:45 a News Conference on the new Anti Crime NRA Alternative Bill. On the House of Representatives Steps going into the House Chambers. News Release

NEWS RELEASE

REP. CORNISH AUTHORS BIPARTISAN NRA ALTERNATIVE BILL

ST. PAUL – In an effort to protect the 2nd Amendment and fight crime, State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Vernon Center) and more than 70 bipartisan co-authors are sponsoring the NRA Alternative bill in the Minnesota House.

“Rather than concentrating on penalizing law abiding citizens who own guns, this legislation focuses on limiting bad guys from gaining access to firearms,” Cornish said.

First, the bill would prohibit felons from possessing ammunition, create mandatory minimums for violent felons that are convicted of possessing firearms on a second or subsequent offense, and provide felony penalties for individuals that engage in repeated false reports of lost or stolen firearms.

The proposal would also create a felony against someone who knowingly purchased a firearm for an ineligible person. It would provide the state and federal criminal background check systems with complete information on individuals that are ineligible from possessing firearms and the duration of the ineligibility, and would also accelerate the time period for reporting criminal data.

Finally, the bill improves reporting of court-determined mental health disqualifications.

“We don’t need anti-gun bills, we need an anti-crime bill,” Cornish said. “The provisions within this bill improve public safety, protect your 2nd Amendment rights, and keep guns out of the hands of criminals.”

Cornish said the bill is also supported by the NRA, GOCRA, the Minnesota Sheriffs Association and other gun-rights advocates.

I like the sound of this.

I will refrain from making comparisons to the Dolittle Raid on Tokyo but I LIKE the idea of fighting fire with fire. The DFL needs to realize that November 4, 2014 will be here before they know it.

At some point parading mommies wailing about their dead babies will grow old.

If Cornish can wrest the momentum / spotlight away from Paymar his political future is bright...and he should be the one to run against Dayton.

We also need to remind ourselves that the third party in Minnesota is the Left Wing Media.

DFLer Hillstrom is said to be one of the main authors of this bill and is on Paymar's committee. There was a recent news article saying this bill has a better shot at passing than Paymar's- as the word has gotten out that Paymar's bill is really full REGISTRATION.

It accomplishes the main goal of the antis: doing something
I wonder if the media will pick up on this, and give credit where credit is due( or continue to go to heather for a quote) And then, will other states say- "let's do what MN did"?

Maybe it will be on TV. It doesn't appear to be scheduled on the in-house media:

It accomplishes all of the stated goals of the antis, without accomplishing any of the actual goals of the antis.

Which is what makes it so brilliant.

And why the antis will oppose it, tooth and nail.

Anyone know the nuts and bolts of what has to happen for this bill to be passed?

Does the bill have to be heard by a committee before the house could vote on it?

Can Paymar prevent it from being heard in the Public Safety committee?

I should have been clearer. It accomplishes what the anti-oriented politicians wish to accomplish: they can be seen as doing something.

There will of course be the usual tiresome blather about children, blood in the streets, etc. I am sure heather has a press release ready to go.

But the benefits of this legislation can be logically defended as effective by those who need the cover.
