Keep emailing your elected officials. The uninformed have computers as well and have very low interest in compromise - the "alternative" NRA backed bill is every bit as unpalatable to them as Paymar's bill is to us.

Keep it clean, be polite, be concise. An angry, rambling 12 paragraph email calling someone an idiot and explaining the constitution doesn't help much. They don't care about that in this case. Just remind them the sitting President's party never fares well in mid-terms in a "good" year and this legislation would be "bad for the party in 2014".
